The 41TE, originally called the A604, is a four-speed front-wheel-drive automatic transaxle that Chrysler introduced around 1989. It was one of the first mass-produced transmissions with fully adaptive electronic control, meaning the computer learns and adjusts each shift as the clutches wear. It went on to serve in a huge range of Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth and Jeep vehicles for nearly two decades, and later versions were still in production well into the 2010s.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale repairs and rebuilds the 41TE for owners of older minivans, sedans and small SUVs. Many of these vehicles are reliable daily drivers, and a good rebuild can keep one going for years.
41TE Applications
The 41TE and its close relatives were used in many front-wheel-drive Chrysler products, including:
- Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town and Country minivans before the six-speed era
- Dodge Intrepid, Chrysler Concorde and other full-size sedans
- Dodge Stratus, Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger
- Chrysler PT Cruiser with the automatic
- Dodge Journey and some Jeep models with four-cylinder engines
Some versions, such as the 40TE and 42TE, share the same basic design with different internal parts. We identify the exact unit from the tag. Six-speed Chrysler minivans use the 62TE.
How the 41TE Shifts
The 41TE has no bands. It uses four clutch packs, an underdrive, overdrive, reverse, 2-4 and low-reverse, applied by a solenoid assembly that the transmission control module operates. The module measures input and output speed to calculate how long each clutch takes to apply, then adjusts. If something drifts too far outside the expected range, the module stores a code and often defaults into second gear limp mode.
Common 41TE Problems
Limp Mode in Second Gear
The most common complaint is a vehicle that suddenly will not shift and feels stuck in second gear. Causes include a failed solenoid pack, speed sensor problems, wiring faults, low fluid and slipping clutches. A scan is the first step. Our limp mode explainer describes why it happens.
Solenoid Pack Failure
The solenoid and pressure switch assembly is a known weak spot. It can cause erratic shifting, no upshifts and multiple codes. If caught early, replacing it may solve the problem without a rebuild.
Input and Output Speed Sensors
Failed or contaminated speed sensors confuse the computer and cause harsh shifts or limp mode. Wiring near the transaxle can also be damaged by heat over time.
Clutch Wear and Burnt Fluid
Many of these vehicles have high miles and old fluid. Slipping, flares on the 2-3 shift and a burnt smell indicate clutch wear. The 2-4 and overdrive clutches are common wear points.
Torque Converter Shudder
Converter clutch problems can cause a shudder at light throttle on the highway, especially with old fluid. Learn more about how the torque converter works.
How We Diagnose a 41TE
We check fluid level and condition, scan for codes, look at clutch volume data, test solenoid and sensor circuits and road test the vehicle. On these older units, wiring and connector problems are common, so we inspect them closely. If the transaxle is healthy and the issue is electrical, a repair may be all you need. If the clutches are worn, we discuss rebuild or replacement options.
41TE Rebuild Process
- Remove and disassemble the transaxle.
- Clean and inspect gear sets, clutch drums, differential and valve body.
- Replace all clutches, steels, seals, gaskets and filter.
- Replace worn bushings, thrust bearings and hard parts.
- Test or replace the solenoid pack and sensors.
- Service or replace the torque converter, flush the cooler, reinstall and run the quick-learn.
Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs.
Is a 41TE Worth Rebuilding?
It depends on the vehicle’s overall condition. On a well-kept older minivan or sedan, rebuilding the transaxle is often more affordable than replacing the vehicle. On a vehicle with other major problems, a used transmission may make more sense. We will give you an honest opinion. See our rebuild vs. replace guide.
41TE Rebuild Cost
Cost depends on the vehicle, the damage found inside, the converter and the solenoid pack. We provide free estimates after diagnosis and never guess at a number up front. Financing is available, and our Arizona rebuild cost guide explains the main price factors.
41TE Transmission FAQ
Why is my van stuck in second gear?
That is typically limp mode. The module has detected a fault and locked the transmission in second to protect it. A scan will show the stored codes.
Is the A604 the same as the 41TE?
Yes. A604 was the original name. It was later renamed 41TE, and updates were made over the years.
Can I fix limp mode by disconnecting the battery?
That may clear the symptom briefly, but the cause remains. Have it diagnosed before the problem causes more damage.
