Stuck in One Gear

The 45RFE and its five-speed sibling, the 545RFE, were used for many years in Dodge and Ram 1500 pickups, Durangos, Dakotas, Jeep Grand Cherokees, Commanders and Liberties. Both are electronically controlled, and both share a common complaint: limp mode. The truck suddenly stops shifting, feels sluggish, revs high on the highway and may show a check engine light.

Limp mode is a protective strategy, not a diagnosis. Here is what triggers it on these transmissions and how the cause is found.

What Limp Mode Means on an RFE Transmission

When the control module detects a fault it cannot safely manage, such as a speed sensor reading that does not make sense or pressure that is out of range, it turns off the shift solenoids and holds the transmission in a fixed default gear. That keeps the vehicle drivable at low speed and prevents further damage. The fault is usually stored as a code. Learn more in what is limp mode.

Common Causes of 45RFE 545RFE Limp Mode

Solenoid and Pressure Switch Assembly

These transmissions use a solenoid pack with pressure switches mounted to the valve body. A failing solenoid, a stuck pressure switch, or a corroded connector can trigger limp mode and solenoid or pressure-related codes. This is one of the more common causes.

Speed Sensors

Input and output speed sensors tell the computer how the transmission is performing. A failed sensor or damaged wiring sends bad data, and the computer responds with limp mode and gear ratio or speed sensor codes.

Wiring, Relays and Voltage

Low battery voltage, a weak charging system, a failing transmission control relay or a chafed harness can all cause limp mode. These problems often come and go, especially with heat and vibration. Simple electrical checks can save a lot of money.

Low Fluid or Line Pressure Problems

Low fluid from a leak can cause pressure faults. A worn pump, sticking pressure regulator or line pressure sensor problem can do the same. See our page on code P0868 for line pressure faults.

Internal Wear and Slipping

When a clutch pack slips, the computer sees a gear ratio that does not match the commanded gear and goes into limp mode. That usually means internal wear or damage, especially on vehicles that tow or have been overheated. See our pages on P0730 incorrect gear ratio and transmission slipping.

Range Sensor Problems

The transmission range sensor tells the computer which gear the shifter is in. A fault can cause shifting problems, starting issues and limp mode.

What You Can Safely Check

Clearing the code with a cheap scanner and continuing to drive without knowing the cause is risky. If the root cause is slipping, every limp-mode episode adds damage.

How Sun West Diagnoses RFE Limp Mode

We scan the transmission module for current and stored codes, freeze-frame data and live data such as speed sensor readings, pressure switch status and line pressure. We check battery voltage, the transmission relay, connectors and the harness. If the electrical side checks out, we road test and pressure test to look for internal slip. See computer transmission diagnostics.

Repair Options

What It Costs

A loose connector and a worn-out transmission are very different repairs. Cost depends on the vehicle and the cause, so call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote after diagnosis. See our Dodge transmission prices page for more on how pricing works. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, and financing is available.

When to Stop Driving

Limp mode lets you get off the road, not keep driving long distances. Avoid freeways in limp mode, since you may not be able to accelerate normally. If limp mode comes with slipping, burning smell or loss of reverse, stop driving and call.

45RFE 545RFE Limp Mode: FAQ

What gear does an RFE transmission default to?

It holds a fixed forward gear, often second or third depending on the application and fault, plus park, reverse and neutral.

Can a bad battery cause limp mode?

Yes. Low voltage can confuse the control module and trigger faults.

Is the 545RFE the same as the 45RFE?

They are closely related. The 545RFE adds a fifth ratio through software and hardware changes, and both share many parts and failure patterns.
