The 545RFE is the five-speed version of Chrysler’s RFE family of rear-wheel-drive automatics. It uses essentially the same case and gear train as the 45RFE but with revised parts and programming that give it five forward gears. For years it was the standard automatic behind the 5.7L Hemi in the Ram 1500, and it was also common in the Durango, Grand Cherokee, Commander and Dakota. Many of those trucks and SUVs have towed boats to Lake Pleasant and trailers up to the Rim, and the 545RFE has done a lot of the work.

Sun West Transmissions in Glendale repairs and rebuilds the 545RFE. Our goal is to find the real cause of the problem, whether that is a sensor, a solenoid pack or worn internal parts.

545RFE Applications

Later Ram 1500 trucks moved to the 65RFE six-speed and then the eight-speed 8HP family. See our 65RFE page and 8-speed transmission page for newer trucks.

What Makes the 545RFE Different

The 545RFE shares the 45RFE layout of three planetary gear sets and clutch-to-clutch shifting, with no bands. The transmission control module times each shift by releasing one clutch while applying another. That makes clutch condition, solenoid response and fluid quality critical. When anything is slightly off, the computer notices through gear ratio and clutch volume readings, and it may set a code or go into limp mode. Our 45RFE page covers the four-speed sibling.

Common 545RFE Failures

2-3 and 3-4 Shift Flare

A flare, where RPM rises during the shift, is a classic sign of a worn clutch or a pressure control problem. On Hemi trucks, the extra torque magnifies even small amounts of slip.

Limp Mode

The 545RFE goes to a default gear, typically second, when it detects a problem. Gear ratio errors, solenoid circuit faults and speed sensor failures are the most common triggers. Ignoring limp mode and driving on can burn clutches.

Solenoid and Pressure Switch Assembly

The solenoid pack on the valve body is a common replacement item. When it fails, shifts can be harsh, delayed or missing, and multiple codes may set at once.

Overheating When Towing

Heavy loads in hot weather push fluid temperatures up fast. Burnt fluid leads to glazed clutches, hardened seals and valve body wear. Adding cooling capacity is one of the best protections for this transmission.

Harsh Engagement and Clunks

A clunk going into gear or a harsh downshift when slowing can come from worn clutches, a sticking valve, driveline wear or adaptive values that need resetting. We check the driveshaft and U-joints too, since they can mimic transmission clunks.

Our Diagnostic Approach

We scan for codes, look at live data including clutch volume index values, check fluid level and condition, inspect wiring and connectors and road test with you if possible. We also look at the transfer case and driveline on 4×4 models. Only after testing do we recommend repair, rebuild or replacement.

545RFE Rebuild Process

Our rebuild includes complete disassembly, cleaning and inspection, new clutches, steels, seals, gaskets and filters, and replacement of worn hard parts such as planetary gear sets, bushings and thrust washers. The valve body is cleaned and checked, the solenoid pack is tested or replaced, and the torque converter is serviced or replaced. We flush the cooler, reinstall, fill with the correct ATF+4 type fluid and run the quick-learn procedure before road testing.

What Does a 545RFE Rebuild Cost?

Cost depends on the vehicle, the extent of the damage, the converter, cooling system needs and any upgrades. We give free estimates after diagnosis. See our Ram transmission price page and Dodge Ram rebuild cost guide for more on what drives the price, and ask about financing.

Tips for Hemi Truck Owners

Use tow/haul mode when towing, watch the transmission temperature if your truck displays it, and change the fluid and filters on a severe-service schedule. If the truck starts flaring or holds second gear, have it checked before it gets worse. Read our towing guide for more.

545RFE Transmission FAQ

Can a 45RFE be converted to a 545RFE?

They share a lot of hardware, but the change involves specific internal parts and programming. It is not just a software switch on every vehicle.

Why does my Ram downshift harshly when stopping?

It may be adaptive learning, a solenoid issue or clutch wear. A scan and road test help determine which.

Is a 545RFE rebuild worth it?

For a truck in good overall condition, a quality rebuild is often the most cost-effective way to keep it on the road for years.
