The Ford 5R110W TorqShift

The 5R110W, marketed by Ford as the TorqShift, is a heavy-duty five-speed automatic that Ford introduced in its Super Duty trucks in the early 2000s. It replaced the older four-speed 4R100 and was built to handle the torque of Power Stroke diesel engines and Ford’s large gas V8 and V10 engines. It includes a tow/haul mode that changes shift timing and adds engine braking when towing.

In the Phoenix area, the 5R110W is most common in F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups with the 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke diesels or the 5.4L and 6.8L gas engines, along with Excursions and some E-series vans and F-series chassis cabs. Many of these trucks are still towing fifth-wheels, horse trailers and work equipment. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale provides diesel transmission diagnosis and full 5R110W TorqShift transmission rebuild service.

What Puts the TorqShift Under Stress

The 5R110W is a strong transmission, but Super Duty trucks live demanding lives. The most common stress factors we see in the Valley include:

Common 5R110W Problems

Slipping and Clutch Wear

Slipping under load, flare between shifts and a loss of certain gears are signs of worn or burned clutch packs. Tuned trucks and heavy towing rigs are most prone to this.

Torque Converter Failure

Converter clutch slip, shudder and internal converter damage are common on high-mileage, hard-working trucks. A failed converter can contaminate the entire transmission with debris.

Solenoid Body and Pressure Control Issues

Harsh shifts, erratic shift timing, limp mode and pressure control codes can come from the solenoid body or electronic pressure control. Sometimes these can be repaired without a full rebuild.

Valve Body Wear

Worn valve body bores create internal leaks that lead to soft shifts, slipping and overheating.

Leaks

Cooler lines, the pan gasket, the front seal and output seals can leak, and low fluid on a loaded diesel truck causes fast damage.

Our 5R110W Diagnostic Process

  1. Road test, ideally under conditions that reproduce the problem.
  2. Scan the powertrain module for codes and review live data such as converter slip, line pressure commands and fluid temperature.
  3. Check fluid level and condition and look for debris.
  4. Inspect cooler lines, the transmission cooler, wiring and connectors.
  5. Ask about tuning, towing weight and modifications.

We’ll tell you if the problem is a solenoid body, sensor or wiring issue that doesn’t require a rebuild.

What Our TorqShift Rebuild Includes

For tuned and towing trucks, we can build the transmission with upgraded clutch packs, a heavy-duty converter and better cooling. Learn more on our transmission upgrades and diesel transmission repair pages.

Warning Signs Worth Acting On

If your Super Duty starts to slip on grades, flares between shifts while towing, or shows a high transmission temperature reading, pull over safely and let it cool before continuing. Repeatedly driving through those symptoms is how a repairable problem turns into a destroyed converter and a full rebuild. Unhitching and having the truck inspected early usually saves money and downtime.

5R110W Rebuild Cost

The cost of a 5R110W rebuild depends on the truck, the internal damage, the torque converter, the solenoid body and any upgrades. Diesel trucks generally require more labor than lighter gas vehicles. Call for a free quote and see our Ford transmission rebuild cost guide for what affects the price.

Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, and financing is available. An auxiliary transmission cooler is a smart addition for towing in Arizona.

5R110W TorqShift FAQ

Can my tuned 6.0L or 6.4L hurt the transmission?

Yes. Extra power increases clutch and converter wear, especially when towing. Consider upgrades if your truck is tuned.

Should I use tow/haul mode?

Yes, when towing. It improves shift timing and engine braking and helps reduce heat and wear.

What fluid does the 5R110W use?

It requires a specific Ford-approved fluid. Using the wrong fluid can affect shift quality, so we use the correct specification.
