The 62TE is a six-speed front-wheel-drive automatic transaxle that Chrysler used for more than a decade in minivans, crossovers and midsize cars. It grew out of the four-speed 41TE, adding an extra compounder gear set to provide six forward ratios. If you have driven a Dodge Grand Caravan or Chrysler Town and Country around the Valley, you have probably driven a 62TE. These vans carry families, rideshare passengers and wheelchair conversions, and they rack up a lot of stop-and-go miles in the heat.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses and rebuilds the 62TE. We understand its electronics, its adaptive learning and its common wear points.
Vehicles with the 62TE
- Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country
- Dodge Journey with the V6
- Chrysler 200 and Sebring, and Dodge Avenger, with the V6
- Volkswagen Routan
- Some Chrysler Pacifica models from the earlier generation
Newer Chrysler minivans and many later crossovers moved to the nine-speed 948TE. For the older four-speed, see the 41TE page.
How the 62TE Works
The 62TE is a clutch-to-clutch transmission controlled entirely by the transmission control module. It uses a solenoid and pressure switch assembly to apply clutches and constantly adapts shift timing as parts wear. This adaptive system means a 62TE can feel normal one week and harsh the next if the learned values become corrupted, a sensor misreads or the fluid level drops. It also means many problems set codes that help narrow down the cause.
Common 62TE Problems
Harsh or Delayed Shifts
Owners often describe a hard 1-2 or 2-3 shift, a bump when coming to a stop or a delay when shifting into drive or reverse. The cause may be software, adaptive values, low fluid, a solenoid issue or worn clutches. Our 62TE shifting problems page goes deeper.
Limp Mode
When the module detects a serious fault, it holds the transmission in a fixed gear, often second or third, and the van feels sluggish and revs high. Limp mode is the transmission protecting itself, and it is a sign to get it checked soon.
Solenoid Pack Failure
The solenoid and pressure switch assembly is a common failure item. It can cause erratic shifts, multiple codes and limp mode.
Clutch Wear and Burnt Fluid
Heavy loads, constant stop-and-go and summer heat wear clutches and break down fluid. Slipping, flaring and a burnt smell are typical signs. These vans also tend to go a long time without fluid service.
Leaks and Low Fluid
Axle seals, pan gaskets and cooler lines can leak. Because many owners never check transaxle fluid, a slow leak can quietly lead to damage. Our transmission fluid leak page explains what to look for.
How We Diagnose a 62TE
We scan the transmission module, review codes and adaptive data, check fluid level with the correct procedure and fluid type, test solenoid and sensor circuits and road test the vehicle. Sometimes a software update and a quick-learn procedure fix the complaint. Other times internal repair is required. We tell you which, and why. Learn more about computer transmission diagnostics.
62TE Rebuild Process
- Remove the transaxle and disassemble it completely.
- Clean and inspect the case, gear sets, differential, clutch drums and valve body.
- Install new clutches, steels, seals, gaskets and filter.
- Replace worn bushings, bearings and hard parts.
- Test or replace the solenoid pack and service the valve body.
- Service or replace the torque converter and flush the cooler.
- Reinstall, fill, perform the quick-learn and road test.
Qualifying rebuilds and replacements are backed by our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty.
62TE Rebuild Cost
Cost depends on whether the fix is software, a solenoid pack or a full rebuild, plus the converter and any additional parts. A remanufactured or used transmission installation may also be options. We give free estimates and explain the trade-offs. Financing is available.
Minivan Care Tips for Arizona
Minivans often carry full loads in heavy traffic, which counts as severe service. Change the fluid on a severe-service schedule, use the correct fluid type, and have shift changes checked early. Rideshare and delivery drivers should read our rideshare transmission care guide.
62TE Transmission FAQ
Can a software update fix my 62TE?
Some shift-quality complaints improve with a software update and quick-learn. If clutches are worn or a solenoid has failed, mechanical repair is needed.
What fluid does the 62TE use?
It requires the specific fluid Chrysler specifies for it. Using the wrong fluid can cause shift problems, so check your owner’s manual or ask us.
Is it safe to drive in limp mode?
Only far enough to get somewhere safe or to the shop. Continued driving can cause more damage.
