6L80E Rebuild Cost at Sun West Transmissions

The GM 6L80E is a six-speed rear-wheel-drive automatic that replaced the 4L60E family in many GM trucks and SUVs starting in the mid-2000s. It’s found in Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra half-tons, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade models, and in performance cars such as the Camaro and Corvette. With six speeds, a wide gear spread and an integrated control module, it’s more sophisticated than the four-speeds it replaced, and rebuilding it properly requires the right knowledge and programming capability.

At Sun West Transmissions in Glendale, our confirmed 6L80E rebuild cost starts at $4,495, including removal and installation. A billet torque converter adds about $300. Estimates are free; call (623) 473-9800.

What the Starting Price Covers

The starting price covers a standard rebuild of a 6L80E with typical wear, including removal and installation. If disassembly shows damaged hard parts, a failed control module or other problems beyond normal wear, we contact you with a quote before doing any extra work. Common 6L80E Problems

Torque Converter Shudder

A shudder or vibration at steady speeds, often between roughly 25 and 50 mph, is one of the most reported 6L80E complaints. It’s usually tied to the converter clutch and fluid condition. In some cases a fluid change with the updated fluid helps; in others, the converter must be replaced. See 6L80E torque converter shudder.

Harsh or Delayed Shifts

Worn clutches, valve body wear, pressure control issues and adaptive values that have drifted can all cause harsh shifts, flares or delayed engagement. See 6L80E shifting hard.

Clutch Pack Wear

The 3-5-reverse and 4-5-6 clutches in particular can wear, leading to slipping or loss of certain gears and sometimes loss of reverse.

Control Module Problems

The 6L80E uses a transmission control module mounted inside the transmission, integrated with the valve body. Heat and age can cause module or internal wiring faults, leading to erratic shifting or limp mode. Replacing the module requires programming to the vehicle.

Leaks and Fluid Level

The 6L80E has no conventional dipstick on most applications. Fluid is checked at a fill plug at a specific temperature. Low fluid from leaks at cooler lines or seals is a common cause of slipping and overheating.

What Affects the Final Cost

Programming and Relearns

After a 6L80E rebuild, the transmission’s adaptive values must be reset and relearned so the computer can control shifts accurately with the new clutches. If the control module has been replaced, it must be programmed to the vehicle. We handle that as part of the job. Learn more on our TCM programming page.

The 6L80E in Arizona Heat

Many 6L80E trucks and SUVs around the Valley tow boats, campers and trailers. The internal control module lives in the fluid, so overheating affects both the clutches and the electronics. Keeping the fluid fresh, maintaining the cooling system and adding an auxiliary cooler for towing are good investments. Read how Arizona heat affects your transmission.

Rebuild vs. Replacement

A rebuild replaces wear parts and addresses known weak points, while a used 6L80E carries an unknown history. For a truck or SUV you plan to keep, a rebuild with a fresh converter is usually the better value. We’ll walk you through the options after diagnosis.

Diagnosis still comes first. Some 6L80E complaints are caused by a failing speed sensor, a connector problem, low fluid or adaptive values that need resetting rather than internal wear. We check fluid level at the proper temperature, scan for codes, review live data such as clutch slip and commanded pressure, and road test when safe. If a rebuild is needed, you will know exactly why before any work begins, and you will have a written quote in hand.

Warranty and Financing

Qualifying 6L80E rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs. See our warranty page and ask about financing.

6L80E Rebuild Cost FAQ

Does the $4,495 price include removal and installation?

Yes. Hard-part damage, module replacement, upgrades or a billet converter are quoted separately.

Will a fluid change fix my 6L80E shudder?

Sometimes, if the converter clutch isn’t badly worn. If the shudder returns, the converter usually needs replacement.

Is the 6L90E the same?

The 6L90E is a heavier-duty relative used in larger trucks and vans, with its own pricing.
