The GM 6T40 Front-Wheel-Drive Six-Speed
The 6T40 is a compact six-speed automatic transaxle that GM used in a wide range of front-wheel-drive and some all-wheel-drive cars and crossovers. It was developed in a joint program with Ford, which is why it shares its basic architecture with Ford’s 6F35. In GM vehicles, it typically sits behind four-cylinder engines.
Common 6T40 applications include the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, Malibu, Equinox and Trax, the GMC Terrain and the Buick Encore and Verano, among others, from the late 2000s through the 2010s. These are popular commuter vehicles across the Valley, so we see plenty of them at Sun West Transmissions in Glendale for diagnosis, repair and 6T40 transmission rebuild work.
How the 6T40 Is Designed
The 6T40 is a clutch-to-clutch transaxle, meaning the control module shifts gears by applying and releasing clutches with precise hydraulic pressure. It combines the transmission and differential into one assembly, which is standard for front-wheel-drive vehicles. Many versions also have the related 6T45 as a slightly higher-capacity sibling.
Because shift quality depends on solenoids, pressure control and software, the 6T40 is sensitive to fluid condition and fluid level. A small leak or worn-out fluid can cause noticeable shifting problems long before the internal parts are badly damaged.
Common 6T40 Problems
3-5-Reverse Clutch Wave Plate Failure
One of the best-known 6T40 issues, especially in earlier units, is a broken wave plate in the 3-5-reverse clutch. When it fails, drivers may lose third, fifth and reverse, or notice harsh engagement. Broken pieces can also circulate through the transmission and damage other components, so prompt repair matters.
Harsh or Delayed Shifts
Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts, clunky downshifts and delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse can be caused by worn clutches, valve body wear, solenoid problems or outdated software. GM released updated calibrations for some models.
Slipping and Flare
Engine RPM flaring between gears or a slipping feeling under acceleration usually points to clutch wear or internal pressure leaks.
Fluid Leaks
Leaks at axle seals, the pan, cooler lines or case connections can lower the fluid level. Since the 6T40 uses a fill and check plug rather than a dipstick on many models, low fluid can go unnoticed until symptoms appear.
Electrical and Module Faults
Shift solenoid codes, communication codes and limp mode can come from the control module, solenoid body or wiring. These may be repairable without a full rebuild.
Driving in Arizona With a 6T40
Most 6T40 vehicles are daily commuters, and Valley commutes involve a lot of heat and traffic. Stop-and-go driving on Bell Road, Glendale Avenue or the I-17 corridor during summer keeps fluid hot for long periods. That accelerates fluid breakdown and clutch wear. Regular transmission service using the correct GM fluid helps protect this transaxle.
How We Diagnose and Rebuild the 6T40
Our process starts with a road test and a scan for codes, followed by a review of live data from the transmission module. We check the fluid level using the proper temperature-based procedure and inspect the fluid for clutch material or metal. If the issue is software, wiring or a solenoid, we’ll explain the fix and avoid an unnecessary rebuild.
When internal damage is found, our 6T40 transmission rebuild typically includes:
- Removal and full disassembly of the transaxle.
- Cleaning and inspection of all parts, including the differential and final drive.
- New clutches, steels, seals, gaskets and filter, including an updated wave plate where applicable.
- Replacement of worn bushings, thrust washers and damaged hard parts.
- Valve body and solenoid inspection, with replacement as needed.
- Torque converter evaluation and replacement if worn or contaminated.
- Reinstallation, correct fluid fill, software update or relearn, and a road test.
6T40 Rebuild Cost
The cost of a 6T40 rebuild depends on your vehicle, the amount of internal damage, the condition of the torque converter and whether the control module or valve body needs replacement. In some cases, a quality used transmission or remanufactured unit may be an option, and we’ll explain the tradeoffs honestly. Call for a free quote.
Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs. Financing is available, and you can learn more about our general transmission repair services or common transmission problems.
6T40 Transmission FAQ
My Cruze lost reverse. What happened?
A common cause is a failed 3-5-reverse clutch wave plate. Have it inspected soon, since broken pieces can damage other parts.
Can a software update fix harsh shifting?
Sometimes. If internal parts are healthy, an updated calibration and adaptive relearn can improve shift quality.
How do I check fluid on a 6T40?
Many models have no dipstick and require a check plug procedure at a specific temperature. It’s best to have a shop check it.
