The 6T70: GM’s V6 Front-Drive Six-Speed
The 6T70 is a six-speed automatic transaxle that GM built for larger front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, typically paired with V6 engines. It was developed jointly with Ford, and Ford’s version is the 6F50. GM rolled it out in the late 2000s, and it went on to power a long list of crossovers and sedans.
The vehicles we see most often with a 6T70 are three-row crossovers like the Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, along with V6 versions of the Equinox, Terrain, Malibu, Impala and LaCrosse. These are heavy family vehicles that work hard in Arizona heat, and Sun West Transmissions in Glendale regularly handles 6T70 transmission rebuild and repair work for West Valley families.
Why Three-Row Crossovers Are Hard on Transmissions
A loaded Traverse or Acadia can weigh a lot by the time it carries a full family, luggage and maybe a small trailer. Combine that weight with 110-degree afternoons, school pickup lines and long highway trips to San Diego or Flagstaff, and the transmission fluid runs hot for extended periods. Over time, heat breaks down the fluid and causes clutch material, seals and solenoids to wear faster.
Many owners also follow long fluid change intervals designed for mild conditions. In the Valley, a severe-service transmission service schedule is often the better choice.
Common 6T70 Failures
3-5-Reverse Wave Plate Breakage
Early 6T70 units in particular became known for broken wave plates in the 3-5-reverse clutch. The classic symptom is a sudden loss of reverse, sometimes along with third and fifth gear. Once the wave plate breaks, pieces can damage the clutch drum and other parts, so the transmission usually needs to be removed and rebuilt with updated components.
Torque Converter Problems
Shudder at light throttle, a vibration at highway speed or torque converter clutch codes can indicate converter wear or a lockup control issue. Converter damage can also contaminate the transmission with debris.
Harsh Shifts and Solenoid Faults
Harsh engagements, clunky downshifts and erratic shifting can come from the control solenoid body, pressure control problems or worn valve body bores. Some issues improve with updated software and an adaptive relearn.
Leaks and Low Fluid
Axle seal leaks, cooler line leaks and pan leaks can quietly drop the fluid level. Because many 6T70 vehicles don’t have an easy dipstick check, low fluid is often discovered only after shifting problems start.
What We Check Before Recommending a Rebuild
At our shop on West Northern Ave, every 6T70 diagnosis includes:
- A road test to verify the complaint under real driving conditions.
- A transmission module scan and live data review, including slip speeds and pressure commands.
- A fluid level check using the correct temperature and check-plug procedure.
- Fluid inspection for burned smell, clutch material or metal debris.
- A look at the power transfer unit, axles and mounts on all-wheel-drive models.
If the fix is a software update, a solenoid body or a seal, we’ll tell you. If the transmission has internal damage, we’ll walk you through the findings and options.
Our 6T70 Transmission Rebuild

- Reinstallation, correct fluid fill, relearn procedures and a road test.
6T70 Rebuild Cost
A 6T70 transmission rebuild is priced according to the vehicle, drivetrain layout, the extent of internal damage, torque converter condition and whether control components need replacement. Three-row crossovers with all-wheel drive can involve more labor than a front-drive sedan. Call us for a free quote. We’ll also explain alternatives such as a used transmission so you can make an informed choice.
Qualifying rebuilds are covered by our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, and financing is available.
We also rebuild the heavier-duty 6T75 and the smaller 6T45.
6T70 Transmission FAQ
My Traverse suddenly has no reverse. Is that the transmission?
Very often, yes. A broken 3-5-reverse wave plate is a common cause. Avoid driving it further and have it inspected.
Is the 6T70 the same as the Ford 6F50?
They share a common design from the GM-Ford partnership, but parts, controls and calibrations differ between the brands.
Should I add a transmission cooler?
If you tow or carry heavy loads often, an auxiliary cooler can help keep fluid temperatures down in Arizona.
