A Common Complaint on GM Eight-Speeds
The GM 8L90 is an eight-speed automatic used behind V8 engines in many Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra half-tons, Cadillac Escalades, Corvettes, Camaros and full-size SUVs starting in the mid-2010s. Its smaller sibling, the 8L45, shares much of the same design. Shortly after these transmissions entered service, many owners reported a shudder or vibration at cruise, along with harsh or clunky shifts at low speed.
If your truck feels like it is rolling over rumble strips at steady speed, here is what is usually going on.
What 8L90 Shudder Feels Like
- Vibration or chatter at light throttle, often between about 25 and 80 mph.
- Shudder that fades if you press harder on the accelerator.
- Vibration felt more on slight uphill grades or after the transmission is warm.
- Sometimes accompanied by firm 1-2 or 2-3 shifts, or a clunk when coming to a stop.
Why the 8L90 Shudders
The Torque Converter Clutch
Like most modern automatics, the 8L90 uses a torque converter clutch that operates with a controlled amount of slip to improve fuel economy. If the fluid cannot keep that slip smooth, the clutch grabs and releases rapidly, which you feel as shudder. Over time this can glaze or damage the clutch surface. Read about how a torque converter works.
Fluid Problems
GM identified fluid as a major factor in many shudder complaints. The original factory fill was found to absorb moisture and lose its ability to control converter clutch slip. GM later issued service information calling for a complete fluid exchange with an updated fluid on affected vehicles. A simple drain and fill typically is not enough because much of the old fluid remains in the converter and cooler.
Converter Damage
If the shudder went on for a long time before being addressed, the converter clutch surface may already be damaged. In that case, a fluid exchange may not fully cure it and the converter may need to be replaced.
Other Sources of Vibration
Not every vibration is the transmission. Driveshaft balance, U-joints, engine misfires, worn mounts, tire problems and cylinder deactivation transitions can all feel similar. Good diagnosis looks at all of these.
What You Can Safely Check
Pay attention to when the vibration happens and whether a slight throttle increase makes it go away. Check whether the fluid has ever been exchanged, and whether a recall or bulletin applies to your vehicle by contacting a dealer or checking the manufacturer’s recall lookup. The 8L90 does not have a conventional dipstick, so checking fluid level is a shop procedure.
How Sun West Diagnoses 8L90 Shudder
We road test the vehicle while monitoring converter slip speed, commanded converter pressure, fluid temperature and engine data. If the vibration lines up with converter slip, the converter circuit is the source. We also check for codes, review shift adapts, look at fluid condition and inspect the driveline. See our transmission diagnostic testing page.
How 8L90 Shudder Is Fixed
Complete Fluid Exchange
For many vehicles, the first step is a full fluid exchange with the updated fluid specified by GM, followed by an adapt reset and road test. This must be done thoroughly to replace the fluid in the converter and cooler, not just the pan. Our article on flush vs. fluid change explains the difference.
Software and Adapt Relearn
Calibration updates and a fresh adaptive relearn can help shift quality after the fluid is corrected. See TCM programming.
Torque Converter Replacement
If shudder persists after a proper fluid exchange, the converter is usually replaced. That requires removing the transmission, so it is also a good time to inspect for other wear. Learn about torque converter replacement.
Rebuild
If the transmission also has slipping, harsh shifts or internal damage, a rebuild may be the right repair. See our 8L90 rebuild page.
What It Costs
The cost depends on which fix your vehicle needs: a fluid exchange, a converter or a full rebuild. Each is priced based on the specific vehicle and what we find, so call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote after diagnosis. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty, and financing is available.
When to Stop Driving
Mild shudder is not usually a safety emergency, but it should be addressed. Prolonged shudder can damage the converter and contaminate the fluid. If the transmission begins slipping, goes into limp mode or the fluid smells burnt, have it checked right away.
8L90 Shudder: FAQ
Does the 8L45 have the same shudder issue?
Many 8L45 vehicles were affected by similar fluid-related shudder, and the diagnosis and repair approach is much the same.
Will the shudder come back after a fluid exchange?
If the converter was not damaged, many vehicles stay smooth afterward. If it returns, the converter likely needs replacement.
Can Arizona heat make it worse?
Heat stresses fluid, so hot climates can make fluid-related problems appear sooner. See how Arizona heat affects your transmission.
