How Often Should a Transmission Be Serviced?

Most automatic transmissions need a fluid service every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on the manufacturer. Driving in the Phoenix area is hard on transmissions: summer heat, towing, hauling and stop-and-go traffic on the 101 and I-10 all count as severe service. If you drive like that, plan on servicing your transmission at the shorter interval.

Warning Signs Your Transmission Needs Attention

  • Slipping, or the engine revs without the vehicle speeding up
  • Late, harsh or jerky shifts
  • Delay when shifting into Drive or Reverse
  • Red or brown fluid leaking under the vehicle
  • Burning smell or dark, burnt-looking fluid
  • Check engine or transmission warning light
  • Shuddering at low speeds

What a Transmission Service Includes

We check the fluid level and condition, look for leaks and signs of overheating, and service the fluid to your vehicle’s requirements. Depending on the transmission, that can include the pan, filter and gasket. If anything points to a bigger problem, we tell you before any repair is done, starting with a free transmission diagnostic.

Transmission Service FAQ

How often should I service my automatic transmission?

Many manufacturers call for transmission fluid service somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 miles, but Phoenix-area heat, towing and stop-and-go traffic count as severe driving and usually call for sooner service. Check your owner’s manual, or call us at (623) 473-9800 and we will tell you what your vehicle needs.

My transmission has no dipstick. Does it still need service?

Yes. Many newer transmissions are sealed with no dipstick, but the fluid still breaks down with heat and miles. These units need the correct fluid and a specific fill procedure, so the level should be set by a shop with the right equipment.

Will a fluid service fix a slipping transmission?

Sometimes. Low or burnt fluid can cause slipping, but worn clutches or internal parts can too. We start with a free transmission diagnostic so you know the cause before you spend money on a repair.

How much does transmission service cost?

It depends on the vehicle, the type and amount of fluid it takes, and whether the pan, filter or gasket is included. Call (623) 473-9800 with your year, make and model for a quote.

Does Arizona heat hurt transmission fluid?

Yes. Heat is the main enemy of transmission fluid. High temperatures break the fluid down faster, which leads to harsh shifts, slipping and early wear. An auxiliary transmission cooler can help vehicles that tow or sit in traffic.

Do you service CVT and dual-clutch transmissions?

Yes. We service and repair conventional automatics, CVTs and dual-clutch transmissions for drivers in Glendale, Phoenix and the West Valley.
