The ZF 9HP is a compact nine-speed automatic designed for front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles with the engine mounted sideways. It arrived in the mid-2010s and was adopted by several automakers, including Jeep, Chrysler, Honda, Acura and Land Rover. Chrysler also builds its own licensed version, known as the 948TE. At Sun West Transmissions in Glendale, we diagnose and rebuild 9HP-family transmissions for drivers across the West Valley.
Vehicles That Use the 9HP
Exact applications vary by year and engine, so we always confirm the transmission by its tag and VIN. Vehicles that have used the ZF 9HP or its Chrysler-built version include:
- Jeep Cherokee, Renegade and newer Compass models
- Chrysler 200 and other front-drive Chrysler products
- Certain model years of the Honda Pilot, Passport, Odyssey and Ridgeline, and Acura models such as the TLX and MDX
- Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque
What Makes the 9HP Unique
Fitting nine speeds into a front-drive package required some unusual engineering. Instead of using only friction clutches, the 9HP uses two dog clutches, which are toothed couplers that lock together. Dog clutches are compact and efficient, but they must be engaged at just the right moment. When software, wear or fluid condition throws off that timing, drivers notice clunks, delays or rough shifts. Early versions in particular received many software updates to improve shift quality.
Common 9HP Problems
Rough, delayed or erratic shifting
Harsh downshifts, a lurch when accelerating from a slow roll, or hunting between gears are the most common complaints. Some cases improve with a software update and adaptive relearn; others are caused by worn clutches or valve body problems.
Clunk or delayed engagement
A clunk when shifting into Drive or Reverse, or a pause before the vehicle moves, can point to dog clutch engagement issues or internal wear. Our page on a clunk when shifting into gear explains other possible causes.
Unexpected neutral or limp mode
Some owners report the transmission dropping into neutral or a fail-safe mode with a warning message. This should be diagnosed promptly, since a sudden loss of drive can be dangerous in traffic.
Fluid leaks and heat
Leaks at seals, the cooler or case joints lower fluid level, which this transmission does not tolerate well. Heat from Phoenix summers and towing speeds up fluid breakdown.
Warning Signs
- A “service transmission” message or check engine light
- Harsh shifts, flare or slipping
- Clunks when changing direction or coming to a stop
- Loss of power or the vehicle stuck in one gear
- Fluid spots under the front of the vehicle
If your vehicle drops into neutral or loses drive, pull over safely and do not keep driving. See what is limp mode for more on fail-safe behavior.
How We Diagnose a 9HP
We start with a careful road test, then scan the transmission control module for codes and review live data such as clutch slip, fluid temperature and shift timing. We check fluid level using the manufacturer’s temperature-based procedure, look for leaks and verify whether the latest software has been installed. Many 9HP issues hinge on TCM programming, so this step is essential. You receive a free estimate before work begins.
Our 9HP Rebuild Process
- Remove and fully disassemble the transmission
- Replace friction clutches, seals, gaskets and filter
- Inspect dog clutches, gear sets, bearings and the differential
- Clean and inspect the valve body and solenoids, repairing as needed
- Service or replace the torque converter
- Flush the cooler, fill with correct fluid, update software and perform the relearn
- Road test to confirm smooth engagement and shifts
On all-wheel-drive models we also inspect the power transfer unit and rear drive, since problems there can mimic transmission faults. Learn more about transfer case and 4×4 repair.
9HP Cost Factors
The price depends on the vehicle, drivetrain and findings. A software update and relearn is a small job compared with a rebuild that needs dog clutch parts or a converter. Parts availability and whether a remanufactured unit is a better value also matter. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote and ask about financing.

ZF 9HP FAQ
Will a software update fix my 9HP?
If the transmission is mechanically healthy, an update and relearn often improve shift quality. If parts are worn, a repair or rebuild is needed.
Is the 948TE the same as the ZF 9HP?
The 948TE is Chrysler’s licensed version of the same basic design. Many parts and principles are shared, but we still match parts to the exact unit.
Can I keep driving with a harsh shift?
Short, careful trips are usually fine, but get it checked soon. Harsh shifts tend to get worse and can damage internal parts.
