The Ford 8F35 is an eight-speed automatic built for front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles with transverse-mounted engines. It replaced the six-speed 6F35 in many of Ford’s late-model crossovers and small trucks, offering more gear ratios for better fuel economy and smoother acceleration. Because it is a newer design, many shops see it less often, but it is becoming common in the West Valley as these vehicles add miles.

Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses, repairs and rebuilds the 8F35. We are a dedicated transmission shop with the scan tools and experience needed for modern electronically controlled automatics.

Vehicles That Use the 8F35

The 8F35 appears in several late-model Ford and Lincoln vehicles, typically paired with the smaller turbocharged engines. Applications include:

Hybrid versions of these vehicles use a different electronic transaxle, and higher-output engines may use a stronger eight-speed. We confirm the exact unit before ordering any parts. For the older six-speed, see our 6F35 rebuild page.

Common 8F35 Complaints

Eight speeds packed into a compact transaxle means many clutches and close shift timing. When something is off, drivers notice it quickly.

Harsh or Delayed Shifts

Some owners report clunky 1-2 or 2-3 shifts, a bump when coming to a stop or a delay when shifting into drive or reverse. Software calibration and adaptive learning play a big role here, and Ford has released updates for some shift-quality concerns. Mechanical wear or a sticking valve can cause similar symptoms, so testing is needed.

Shift Flare and Slipping

If engine RPM flares between gears or the vehicle feels like it loses power during a shift, a clutch may be slipping or a solenoid may not be controlling pressure correctly. Heat makes this worse.

Torque Converter Shudder

A light vibration at steady speeds can come from the converter clutch. Fluid condition and converter wear are the usual suspects.

Warning Lights and Limp Mode

A transmission fault can trigger a wrench light or check engine light and put the vehicle into a reduced-power mode. Our page on what limp mode means explains why the computer does this.

Leaks

Axle seals, pan or cover gaskets and cooler line connections can leak. Low fluid in a modern eight-speed can cause damage quickly.

How We Diagnose an 8F35

Modern transaxles need modern diagnosis. We scan the transmission and engine modules, check for software updates, review adaptive values and live data such as clutch slip and fluid temperature, verify fluid level using the correct procedure and road test the vehicle. Checking fluid on many newer Fords is not as simple as pulling a dipstick, so it should be done with the right procedure and temperature. Learn more on our diagnostic testing page.

8F35 Repair and Rebuild Options

Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty. If your vehicle is still under factory coverage, we will tell you so and suggest checking with the dealer first.

8F35 Rebuild Cost

The cost depends on the vehicle, whether the fix is software, a component or a full rebuild, and on parts availability for this newer unit. We provide a free estimate after diagnosis instead of guessing. Ask us about financing, and see our Ford transmission rebuild cost guide for what drives the price.

Protecting a Late-Model Transaxle in Arizona

Compact crossovers spend a lot of time in stop-and-go traffic and parked in the sun. Fluid breaks down faster in high heat, so consider a fluid service on a severe-service schedule. Our guides on how often to change transmission fluid and why transmissions overheat explain more.

8F35 Transmission FAQ

Is the 8F35 a CVT?

No. The 8F35 is a conventional automatic with eight fixed gears, clutches and a torque converter. It is not a belt-driven CVT.

Can harsh shifting be fixed without opening the transmission?

Sometimes. A software update or adaptive relearn may help. If wear or damage is present, mechanical repair is needed.

Is the 8F35 the same as the 6F35?

No. They fill a similar role, but the 8F35 is a different, newer design with eight speeds.
