Dodge Grand Caravan Transmission Repair in Glendale
The Dodge Grand Caravan has carried countless West Valley families, youth sports teams and small business crews. It is also one of the most common minivans used for wheelchair-accessible conversions and for work around the Valley. When the transmission starts acting up, a busy household or business feels it right away. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale provides Dodge Grand Caravan transmission repair for both late-model and older vans.
We are a dedicated transmission shop. We diagnose first, explain what we find and give a free estimate before any work.
Grand Caravan Transmission Types
Most Grand Caravans on the road today use one of two Chrysler front-wheel-drive transaxles.
- 41TE four-speed automatic, used in many earlier generations. It is an electronically controlled unit related to the older A604 design.
- 62TE six-speed automatic, used in most Grand Caravans from the 2008 model year until production ended. It shares much of its design with the 41TE but adds gears and a different control strategy.

Common Grand Caravan Transmission Problems
Harsh or Erratic Shifts
The 62TE is known for harsh shifts, especially on downshifts as the van slows. Causes include worn clutch packs, solenoid pack problems, valve body wear and adaptive learning that has drifted. Some issues improve with a software update or relearn, while others need internal repair.
Limp Mode
If the van suddenly holds second gear and will not shift, the transmission control system has put it in a protective mode. Sensor faults, wiring problems, low fluid or internal clutch failure can all trigger this. Our limp mode page explains what is happening.
Slipping and Flaring
RPM that rises during a shift without acceleration is slipping. It often shows up first on the 2-3 or 3-4 shift and gets worse with heat. A fully loaded van climbing out of the Valley on the I-17 makes it more noticeable.
Delayed Engagement
A pause before drive or reverse engages can come from low fluid, internal leaks or worn seals. See our delayed engagement page for more detail.
Fluid Leaks and Cooler Line Issues
Leaks at cooler lines, the pan and axle seals are common on older vans. Low fluid quickly causes shifting problems in these units.
How We Diagnose Your Van
- Scan the transmission control module for stored and pending codes.
- Check fluid level and condition. The 62TE uses a specific fluid, and the wrong type can cause shift problems.
- Road test with live data to look at clutch volume indexes, slip and temperature.
- Inspect mounts, axles, wiring connectors and cooler lines.
- Explain the findings and give a free estimate.
Repair Options for Grand Caravans
Depending on the cause, your van may need a fluid service with the correct fluid, a solenoid pack, a valve body repair, a TCM software update or relearn, or a complete transmission rebuild. For high-mileage vans, we can also discuss a remanufactured or used transmission option.
Cost depends on the transmission, what failed and the parts required. We do not quote prices before we know what is wrong. Call for a free quote, and see our Dodge transmission pricing page for what drives cost. Financing is available.
Minivan Transmission Care in Arizona
Minivans often carry full loads in stop-and-go traffic during the hottest months, which is close to the definition of severe service. Fluid breaks down faster in these conditions, and the 62TE is particular about fluid type and level.
- Use only the fluid specified for your transmission.
- Service the fluid based on condition and how hard the van works.
- Have harsh shifts checked early, before slipping causes heat damage.
- If you have a conversion van, remember the extra weight adds load to the transmission.

Dodge Grand Caravan Transmission FAQ
Why does my Grand Caravan shift hard when slowing down?
Harsh downshifts on the 62TE are often tied to clutch wear, solenoid pack issues or adaptive learning. A scan and road test can tell us which one.
Can I use universal transmission fluid in my van?
It is best to use the fluid Chrysler specifies. The wrong fluid can cause shift complaints in these transmissions.
Is it worth fixing the transmission in an older Grand Caravan?
Often it is, if the rest of the van is in good shape. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free estimate and honest options.
