The GM 8L90 Eight-Speed Automatic
The 8L90 is GM’s rear-wheel-drive eight-speed automatic, introduced in the mid-2010s for V8 trucks, SUVs and performance cars. It replaced the six-speed 6L90E and 6L80E in many applications, offering closer gear spacing, quicker shifts and better highway fuel economy.
In the Valley, we most often see the 8L90 in Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade SUVs with V8 engines, and in certain Corvette and Camaro models. If your vehicle has a shudder, harsh shift or warning light, Sun West Transmissions in Glendale can diagnose it accurately and perform an 8L90 transmission rebuild if that’s what it truly needs.
How the 8L90 Is Designed
The 8L90 uses four planetary gear sets and five clutches to create eight forward gears. Like GM’s six-speeds, it shifts clutch-to-clutch under the direction of a control module mounted inside the transmission. With so many gears and fast shift times, the 8L90 depends heavily on precise hydraulic control, proper fluid and accurate software.
A lighter-duty sibling, the 8L45, uses a similar design for smaller engines. The two are not interchangeable.
The 8L90 Shudder Problem
The most talked-about 8L90 issue is a shudder or vibration, often felt at steady speeds or light acceleration, that feels like driving over rumble strips. GM issued service bulletins addressing this concern. The usual first step involves exchanging the original fluid for an updated fluid specification, and in some cases replacing the torque converter.
Because the shudder can come from the converter clutch, the fluid or other driveline issues, we confirm the cause before recommending a repair. A fluid exchange alone may help if the converter isn’t damaged. If shudder has been ignored for a long time, the converter may already be worn and need replacement.
Other Common 8L90 Concerns
Harsh or Clunky Shifts
Some owners report harsh upshifts or downshifts, particularly at low speeds. Software updates, adaptive relearns or valve body repairs can sometimes correct these concerns. In other cases, worn clutches or internal leaks are to blame.
Delayed Engagement
A delay when shifting into Drive or Reverse can point to low fluid, pump issues or internal leaks.
Slipping and Flare
Slipping between gears or engine RPM flaring under load usually indicates clutch wear, especially in trucks that tow or have had engine modifications.
Module and Solenoid Faults
Transmission warning messages, limp mode and communication codes can trace back to the internal control module, solenoids or wiring.
Arizona Driving and the 8L90
Many 8L90 vehicles are towing and hauling machines. Pulling a boat to Lake Pleasant or a travel trailer up I-17 in summer generates serious heat. Even daily driving in Glendale traffic during monsoon season can keep fluid hot. Heat accelerates fluid breakdown, which is directly linked to shudder and clutch wear in this transmission. A severe-service transmission service schedule is wise here.
How We Diagnose an 8L90
- Road test to reproduce the shudder, shift or engagement complaint.
- Scan for codes and review live data, including converter slip and fluid temperature.
- Check fluid level using GM’s temperature-based procedure.
- Inspect fluid condition and look for leaks or debris.
- Check for open service bulletins and available software updates.
Our goal is to fix the actual cause. If an updated fluid exchange or software update is the right answer, that’s what we’ll recommend first.

8L90 Transmission FAQ
Can a fluid change fix 8L90 shudder?
Often it helps, especially when done early with the updated fluid. If the converter is already damaged, it may need to be replaced.
Is it safe to drive with shudder?
Mild shudder isn’t usually an immediate danger, but it can worsen and damage the converter. Have it checked soon.
Does the 8L90 need special fluid?
Yes. Using the correct GM-specified fluid is important. We use the proper fluid for your transmission.
