Jeep Cherokee Transmission Repair in Glendale, AZ

The name “Jeep Cherokee” covers two very different vehicles. Many Arizona drivers still love the boxy XJ Cherokee for its toughness, while the newer front-wheel-drive-based Cherokee is a popular compact SUV for commuting around Glendale, Peoria and Phoenix. Sun West Transmissions provides Jeep Cherokee transmission repair for both, along with the four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive components that go with them.

We are a dedicated transmission shop. That means a careful diagnosis, a free estimate and an honest recommendation before any repair begins.

Which Cherokee Do You Have?

Modern Cherokee (2014 Model Year Onward)

The modern Cherokee uses the 948TE nine-speed automatic, Chrysler’s version of the ZF 9HP. Four-wheel-drive versions use a power transfer unit (PTU) and a rear drive module that can disconnect the rear axle to save fuel. These systems are compact, electronically controlled and sensitive to fluid level and condition.

Classic XJ Cherokee

Most automatic XJ Cherokees use the Aisin-built AW4 four-speed automatic, a durable unit that is still widely rebuilt today. Early XJs also used other automatics and several manual transmissions, paired with part-time or full-time transfer cases.

For details on the nine-speed, see our 948TE rebuild and ZF 9HP rebuild pages, plus our Jeep 948TE problems guide.

Common Problems on the Modern Cherokee

Rough or Erratic Shifting

Early nine-speed Cherokees became known for jerky shifts, delayed engagement and odd shift timing. Many software updates were released to improve this. If your Cherokee still shifts poorly after updates, internal wear or valve body issues may be involved.

Hesitation and Sudden Downshifts

Some owners describe a hesitation when accelerating from a slow roll or a sudden, harsh downshift. Fluid condition, adaptive learning and internal clutch wear can all contribute.

PTU and Rear Drive Module Problems

A “Service 4WD” or “Service AWD” warning, whining noises or clunks may come from the PTU or rear drive module rather than the transmission. PTU fluid is small in volume and can break down quickly in Arizona heat.

Transmission Warning Messages

A transmission warning with reduced power often means the control system has detected a fault. Read more on our transmission warning light page.

How We Diagnose a Cherokee

  1. Scan the powertrain and drivetrain modules for current and stored codes, including software level.
  2. Check transmission, PTU, rear drive module or transfer case fluids for level and condition.
  3. Road test with live data to see shift timing, slip and temperature.
  4. Inspect mounts, axles, driveshafts and cooler lines.
  5. Explain the findings and provide a free estimate.

Repair Options

Many modern Cherokee complaints start with a software check through our TCM programming service and a correct fluid level. When internal problems exist, a valve body repair, a complete transmission rebuild or a replacement unit may be needed. For XJ owners, a quality AW4 rebuild is often a smart investment in a vehicle they plan to keep. We also handle transfer case repair and 4×4 service.

Cost depends on which Cherokee you have, what failed and the parts needed. We do not quote prices before diagnosis. Call for a free quote, and ask about financing.

Jeep Cherokee Transmission FAQ

Can software updates fix my Cherokee’s nine-speed?

Updates often improve shift quality, but they cannot repair worn internal parts. We check both the software and the mechanical condition.

Do you still rebuild AW4 transmissions for XJ Cherokees?

Yes. The AW4 is a durable design that rebuilds well.

What is a PTU and why does it fail?

The PTU sends power to the rear wheels on 4WD models. Small fluid capacity and heat can wear it out. Call (623) 473-9800 for an inspection.
