Keep Your 4WD Ready When You Need It
A four-wheel-drive system can sit unused for months and then be asked to work hard in a single afternoon: a wash crossing on a forest road, sand near the river, a muddy trailhead after monsoon rains, or a steep, loose boat ramp. If the system has been neglected, that is often when it fails. Regular 4×4 service in Glendale, AZ keeps the transfer case, axles and engagement system healthy and ready.
At Sun West Transmissions, we service the full drivetrain, not just the transmission. That makes us a natural fit for trucks, Jeeps and SUVs that see both freeway miles and off-road use.
What Our 4×4 Service Covers
- Transfer case fluid change with the correct fluid for your unit, whether ATF, a dedicated transfer case fluid or gear oil
- Front and rear differential fluid change, with friction modifier added for limited-slip units when specified
- Inspection of differential and transfer case seals for leaks
- Driveshaft and U-joint inspection, plus grease where fittings are present
- CV axle and boot inspection on independent front suspension trucks and SUVs
- Front axle engagement check, including vacuum or electric actuators and locking hubs
- 4WD system operation test in 2WD, 4-High and 4-Low where safe
- Scan for 4WD and AWD codes
Why 4×4 Fluids Need Attention in Arizona
Gear oil and transfer case fluid break down with heat, and heat is never in short supply here. Towing, long highway runs to Flagstaff or Show Low, and slow technical trails all raise drivetrain temperatures. Water crossings can also get past seals and contaminate fluids, turning them milky. Contaminated gear oil does not protect gears and bearings, and failures can follow quickly.
If you have driven through deep water, it is a good idea to check the differentials and transfer case soon afterward. Milky fluid is a clear sign water got in.
Part-Time, Full-Time and Automatic 4WD
Part-Time 4WD
Common on many pickups and Jeeps, part-time systems lock the front and rear driveshafts together. They should only be used on loose or slippery surfaces. Using them on dry pavement causes binding and drivetrain stress.
Full-Time 4WD
These systems include a center differential or clutch that allows the front and rear to turn at different speeds, so they can be used on pavement. They need correct fluid and matched tires.
Automatic 4WD and AWD
These use electronically controlled clutches to send power to the front when slip is detected. The clutch packs are sensitive to fluid type and tire size differences. Our transfer case repair page covers common failures.
Exercise Your 4WD
Many 4WD problems show up because the system is rarely used. Actuators, shift forks and hubs can stick, and seals can dry out. Engaging 4WD briefly on a loose surface every month or so keeps parts moving and lubricated. Check your owner’s manual for any specific recommendations.
Signs Your 4×4 Needs More Than Service
- Whining or howling from an axle that changes with speed or throttle
- Clunks when shifting into 4WD or when accelerating
- Vibration that increases with speed, often from driveshaft or U-joint problems
- 4WD that will not engage, or a flashing 4WD light
- Clicking in turns from a worn CV joint
- Fluid leaking from pinion or axle seals
If we find any of these during service, we will explain the cause and your options, from differential repair to U-joint replacement or CV axle replacement.
Lifted Trucks and Larger Tires
Lift kits and larger tires change driveline angles and add load to the drivetrain. Steeper angles wear U-joints and CV joints faster, and bigger tires effectively change gearing, which raises transmission temperatures. If you have modified your truck, we can check driveline angles, recommend re-gearing if needed, and look at transmission upgrades and a transmission cooler to handle the extra stress.
Don’t Forget the Transmission
Your 4×4’s transmission works harder than most. Off-road crawling, towing and heat are tough on fluid. Pairing 4×4 service with a transmission fluid change covers the entire drivetrain in one visit.
4×4 Service FAQ
How often should 4×4 fluids be changed?
Follow your owner’s manual, using the severe-service schedule if you tow, go off-road or cross water. In Valley heat, many vehicles qualify as severe service.
Do AWD cars need this service too?
Yes. AWD vehicles have transfer units or power take-off units and rear differentials with their own fluid.
How much does 4×4 service cost?
It depends on the vehicle, number of components and fluids required. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote.
