A Small Service That Protects an Expensive Part
The rear differential sits in the center of the rear axle on rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. Inside, the ring and pinion gears transfer all of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels under tremendous pressure. A bath of gear oil is all that keeps those gear teeth from wearing into each other.
Gear oil does not last forever, especially in Phoenix heat. Rear differential service in Glendale, AZ replaces worn oil, inspects for leaks and early wear, and helps avoid the much bigger cost of a differential repair or axle rebuild.
Why Gear Oil Wears Out
Gear oil is formulated with extreme-pressure additives that cling to gear teeth. Over time, heat and shear break those additives down. Fine metal particles from normal wear collect in the oil and act like a mild abrasive. Moisture can condense inside the housing through the vent as it heats and cools, and deep water crossings can pull in a lot more. The result is oil that protects less and less with every mile.
Towing, hauling, high speeds in summer and larger tires all increase differential temperatures, which is why many owner’s manuals list a shorter interval for severe service.
What Our Rear Differential Service Includes
- Verify the correct oil viscosity and specification for your axle, including whether it needs synthetic oil or a limited-slip friction modifier.
- Drain the old oil by removing the cover or drain plug, depending on the axle design.
- Inspect the oil and internals where the cover comes off, looking at the gears, the magnet on the drain plug or cover, and signs of chipped teeth or bearing wear.
- Clean the housing and cover, and remove old gasket material.
- Install a new gasket or proper sealant and torque the cover bolts evenly.
- Refill to the correct level, usually to the bottom of the fill hole on most axles.
- Check for leaks at the pinion seal, axle seals and vent, and inspect the U-joints and driveshaft while we are under the vehicle.
What the Old Oil Tells Us
- Fine gray sheen on the magnet is normal wear.
- Chunks or flakes of metal can mean chipped gears or failing bearings.
- Milky or foamy oil means water contamination.
- Very dark oil with a burnt smell points to overheating.
- Low oil level means a leak somewhere that needs to be found.
If we find something concerning, we will show you and explain whether it can be monitored or needs attention.
Limited-Slip Differentials Need the Right Oil
Many trucks and performance cars have limited-slip rear differentials that use clutch packs. These require either a gear oil that already contains friction modifier or a separate additive. Without it, the clutches can grab and release in turns, causing chatter or a shuddering feeling in parking lots. With too much or the wrong type, the limited-slip may not work as intended. We follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for your axle.
How Often Should the Rear Differential Be Serviced?
It varies by vehicle. Some manufacturers specify regular changes, while others list long intervals for normal use and much shorter ones for towing or severe conditions. In the West Valley, the severe-service schedule often applies. If you have bought a used truck and do not know when the differential was last serviced, now is a good time. Ask about combining it with front differential and transfer case service in our 4×4 service.
Signs You Should Not Wait
- A new whine or howl from the rear of the vehicle
- Gear oil drips under the axle or on the inside of a rear tire
- Chatter in tight turns on a limited-slip axle
- After driving through deep water
- After a long, heavy tow in summer heat

Rear Differential Service FAQ
Can I just top off the gear oil?
Topping off fixes a low level temporarily, but the oil may still be worn out, and low oil means a leak. A full service is the better choice.
Is synthetic gear oil better?
Synthetic oil handles heat well and is required in some axles. We use what your manufacturer specifies.
How much does rear differential service cost?
It depends on the axle, oil type and amount, and whether a cover gasket is needed. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote.
