The Legendary Turbo 400

The Turbo-Hydramatic 400, better known as the TH400 or Turbo 400, earned its reputation as one of the strongest three-speed automatics ever built. GM introduced it in the mid-1960s for big-block cars, heavy trucks and luxury vehicles, and it stayed in production for decades. Several other automakers also used versions of it, a testament to its durability.

In Arizona, the TH400 still shows up everywhere: in classic 3/4-ton and 1-ton Chevy and GMC pickups, older motorhomes, muscle cars, off-road rigs and drag cars. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale rebuilds the TH400 for daily drivers, work trucks, RVs and high-horsepower builds, matching the parts and calibration to how you use your vehicle.

What Makes the TH400 So Strong

The TH400 was overbuilt by design. It uses large clutch packs, heavy planetary gear sets, bands and a robust case. Unlike the TH350, which uses a kickdown cable, most TH400s use an electric kickdown switch and solenoid for passing-gear downshifts. Shift timing is controlled by a governor and a vacuum modulator, so there’s no computer involved.

That toughness is why the TH400 became the foundation for GM’s later electronic 4L80E, which added an overdrive and electronic controls to a similar heavy-duty design.

Common TH400 Problems

The TH400 is strong, but age, heat and hard use eventually catch up with it. Here are the issues we see most often:

TH400s in Motorhomes and Tow Vehicles

Many older motorhomes in the Valley rely on a TH400. A loaded RV heading north on I-17 toward Flagstaff or west on I-10 toward the river in summer puts the transmission under sustained heavy load and heat. If the cooler is undersized or the fluid is old, slipping and burned clutches can follow. For RVs and tow rigs, we recommend a heavy-duty rebuild, a properly matched torque converter and an auxiliary transmission cooler.

Performance and Racing Builds

The TH400 is a favorite for drag racing, off-road racing and high-horsepower street cars because it can handle serious torque when built correctly. Performance builds often include upgraded clutches and steels, a modified or manual valve body, a stronger input shaft, an upgraded sprag and a high-stall torque converter. Our TH400 Rebuild Process

  1. Check fluid, vacuum supply, kickdown wiring and linkage before removal.
  2. Remove and completely disassemble the transmission.
  3. Clean and inspect the pump, drums, gear sets, shafts, sprag and case.
  4. Install new clutches, steels, bands, seals, gaskets, bushings and filter.
  5. Service or upgrade the valve body to match your intended use.
  6. Replace the vacuum modulator and test the kickdown circuit.
  7. Install a new or upgraded torque converter when needed.
  8. Reinstall, adjust, fill and road test.

Signs Your TH400 Needs Attention

Watch for fluid that looks dark or smells burnt, a delay when shifting into Drive or Reverse, or engine RPM that climbs without the vehicle speeding up. A clunk into gear, a missing passing gear or fluid spots under the vehicle are also worth checking. Catching problems early often means fewer damaged parts and a less involved rebuild.

What a TH400 Rebuild Costs

TH400 rebuild pricing depends on the condition of your core, which hard parts need replacement, whether you want a stock, heavy-duty or racing build, and the torque converter you choose. RVs and custom vehicles can also require more labor to remove and install the transmission. Call us for a free quote on your vehicle and intended use.

Qualifying rebuilds come with our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs. Racing or competition use may not qualify, so ask us about coverage for your build. Financing is available.

TH400 Transmission FAQ

Is the TH400 better than the TH350?

The TH400 is stronger and better for heavy loads and high power. The TH350 is lighter and works well for moderate-power cars.

Can I add overdrive to my TH400 vehicle?

Swapping to a 4L80E is a common way to get overdrive with similar strength, though it requires electronic controls.

Why doesn’t my passing gear work?

A faulty kickdown switch, solenoid or wiring is a common cause. It’s often a simple repair.
