The 948TE is a nine-speed front-wheel-drive automatic transaxle that Chrysler builds under license from ZF, based on the ZF 9HP design. It arrived in the mid-2010s and quickly spread across Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Fiat models. Nine gears pack a lot into a compact case, and the design uses a pair of dog clutches along with conventional multi-plate clutches. That combination is efficient, but it has also given the 948TE a reputation for rough shifts and occasional engagement problems.

Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses, repairs and rebuilds the 948TE. Because many of its complaints are tied to software and adaptive learning, we start with a careful electronic diagnosis before recommending mechanical work.

Vehicles That Use the 948TE

Similar ZF 9HP units are used by other manufacturers. Our ZF 9HP rebuild page covers the broader family.

What Makes the 948TE Different

Most automatics use only friction clutches and brakes to change gears. The 948TE adds two dog clutches, which are toothed couplings that lock components together mechanically. Dog clutches are compact and efficient, but they must be engaged at just the right moment, with speeds matched by the computer. If the timing is off, owners can feel clunks, delays or a failure to engage a gear. The transmission control software has been revised many times over the life of this unit to improve shift quality.

Common 948TE Problems

Rough or Harsh Shifts

The most frequent complaint is a rough 1-2 or 2-3 shift, a hard downshift while slowing or a bump when accelerating from a rolling stop. Many cases improve with updated software and an adaptive relearn.

Delayed Engagement or No Reverse

Some vehicles hesitate when shifting into drive or reverse, or briefly fail to engage. Dog clutch engagement, low fluid, a valve body issue or internal wear can be the cause.

Unexpected Neutral or Limp Mode

A 948TE may shift into neutral or a limited mode when it detects a fault. This is a safety issue in traffic and should be addressed right away. Our Jeep 948TE problems page covers this in more depth.

Clutch Wear and Fluid Breakdown

Heat and stop-and-go driving wear clutch packs and break down the fluid. Fluid level checks on this unit require a specific procedure and temperature, not just a dipstick.

Driveline Noises on AWD Models

On all-wheel-drive Jeeps, the power transfer unit and rear drive module can cause noises or vibrations that feel like transmission problems. We check the full driveline before blaming the transaxle.

How We Diagnose a 948TE

We scan the transmission module, check software level, read codes and adaptive values, verify fluid level using the proper procedure and road test the vehicle. Depending on the findings, the fix may be a software update and relearn, a valve body or solenoid repair, or internal work. Learn more about our TCM programming service.

948TE Repair and Rebuild Options

Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty. If your vehicle may still be covered by factory warranty, we will suggest you check with the dealer first.

Living with a 948TE in Arizona

Heat and heavy traffic shorten fluid life. Have the fluid serviced on a severe-service schedule, report any change in shift feel early, and make sure the vehicle has the latest software. Our harsh shifting guide explains other possible causes.

948TE Transmission FAQ

Is the 948TE the same as the ZF 9HP?

It is based on the ZF 9HP design and built by Chrysler under license, with calibrations for Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Fiat vehicles.

Will a software update fix rough shifting?

In many cases it helps. If the rough shift comes from wear or a mechanical fault, repair is still needed.

My Jeep went into neutral while driving. What should I do?

Get safely off the road and have it diagnosed before driving it further. Unexpected neutral is a safety concern.
