The Nine-Speed in Jeep Cherokee, Compass and Renegade

The 948TE is a nine-speed front-wheel-drive automatic based on the ZF 9HP design. Chrysler-group vehicles began using it in the mid-2010s, including the Jeep Cherokee, Compass and Renegade, the Chrysler 200, the Chrysler Pacifica and the Ram ProMaster City. Nine gears in a compact package allowed better fuel economy, but early in its life the 948TE earned a reputation for rough and unpredictable shifting.

Many of those complaints were addressed through software, while others point to genuine hardware wear. Here is what drivers typically experience and how the issues are sorted out.

Common Jeep 948TE Problems

What Causes 948TE Problems

Software Calibration

The 948TE received numerous software updates intended to smooth shifts and improve drivability. A vehicle running older software may still show complaints that later calibrations address. Checking the software level is one of the first steps. See TCM programming.

Adaptive Learning

The module learns clutch engagement over time. After a battery disconnect or repair, adapts reset and the transmission may shift poorly until a proper relearn is completed with a scan tool and drive cycle.

Dog Clutch Engagement

The 9HP design uses dog clutches for some gear changes in addition to conventional friction clutches. Dog clutches must be engaged with precise speed matching. When that timing is off due to software, wear or hydraulic issues, drivers may feel clunks or delayed engagement.

Fluid Level and Condition

The 948TE requires a specific fluid and fill procedure. Low or incorrect fluid causes erratic operation. Leaks and fluid breakdown from heat matter more here in the Valley, where these crossovers often sit in hot parking lots and idle in traffic.

Valve Body and Solenoids

Sticking or failing solenoids and valve body problems cause harsh shifts, flare or limp mode with related codes. Read what is a valve body.

Internal Wear

Clutch packs, bearings and other internal parts can wear, causing slips, noise or loss of gears that software cannot fix. Higher-mileage units and vehicles used for towing are more likely to reach this point.

AWD Drivetrain Components

On four-wheel-drive Cherokees and Compasses, the power transfer unit and rear drive module can cause clunks or noises that feel like transmission problems. These are checked separately. See 4×4 service.

What You Can Safely Check

Note when the problem happens and under what conditions. Look for warning messages. Contact a dealer or use the manufacturer’s recall lookup to see if your vehicle has open recalls or software campaigns. Do not try to check or fill the fluid without the proper procedure, since the 948TE does not use a traditional dipstick in most applications.

How Sun West Diagnoses the 948TE

We road test the vehicle, scan for codes, review adapt values and live data, and confirm the software level. We check fluid level with the correct procedure and inspect the AWD components on four-wheel-drive models. That lets us separate software, hydraulic, electrical and mechanical causes. See computer transmission diagnostics.

Repair Options

  1. Software update and adaptive relearn.
  2. Fluid correction with the proper fluid and fill procedure.
  3. Valve body or solenoid repair.
  4. Rebuild for internal wear. See our 948TE rebuild page and ZF 9HP rebuild page.

Vehicle-specific information is on our Jeep Cherokee and Chrysler Pacifica pages.

What It Costs

A software update and a rebuild are very different jobs. Cost depends on the vehicle and diagnosis, so call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, and financing is available.

When to Stop Driving

If the vehicle hesitates dangerously when pulling into traffic, unexpectedly loses drive, or shows limp mode with slipping, stop driving and have it checked. Hesitation when crossing traffic is a real safety risk.

Jeep 948TE Problems: FAQ

Are 948TE shifting complaints normal?

Some firmness is typical of a nine-speed, but harsh clunks, hesitation and hunting are not normal and should be checked.

Is the 948TE the same as the ZF 9HP?

The 948TE is based on the ZF 9HP design and shares its architecture.

Can software updates fix everything?

Software helps many drivability complaints, but it cannot fix worn or damaged parts.
