Ford’s 4R70W Four-Speed Automatic
The 4R70W is a four-speed overdrive automatic that Ford used in rear-wheel-drive cars, trucks and SUVs from the late 1990s through the 2000s. It evolved from the earlier AOD and AODE, adding wider gear ratios and electronic controls for better acceleration and highway efficiency. The “W” stands for wide ratio.
The 4R70W powered many popular Fords, including F-150 pickups, Expedition SUVs, E-series vans, Mustangs, and the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car. Many former police cars and taxis in Arizona used this transmission, and plenty of F-150s from that era are still working hard. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale handles diagnosis, repair and full 4R70W transmission rebuild work.
How the 4R70W Works
The 4R70W uses a Ravigneaux planetary gear set, clutch packs, bands and one-way clutches. The powertrain computer controls shifting through shift solenoids, an electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid and a torque converter clutch solenoid. Because of those electronic controls, many shifting problems can be traced to electrical faults, while others involve hydraulic wear or worn friction parts.
A later evolution, the 4R75W, shares much of the same design with updates for durability.
Common 4R70W Problems
Slipping or No Overdrive
Wear in the overdrive band, servo or related components can cause slipping into fourth gear or no overdrive at all. Servo bore wear in the case is a known issue that we check carefully during rebuilds.
Delayed or Harsh Engagement
Problems with the forward clutch, EPC solenoid or valve body can cause delayed engagement into Drive or harsh shifts.
Torque Converter Shudder
Shudder at highway speeds often relates to the torque converter clutch or the fluid condition. High-mileage converters can also wear and contaminate the transmission.
Loss of Reverse
Failures in the reverse clutch, low/reverse band or related parts can result in no reverse.
Valve Body Wear
Worn bores in the valve body can create pressure leaks that lead to soft shifts, flare and overheating of clutches.
You can read more about these on our Ford 4R70W problems page.
Arizona Conditions and the 4R70W
Many 4R70W vehicles are now 15 to 25 years old, and most have spent years in desert heat. Old fluid, dried seals and towing in summer are the biggest threats. An F-150 towing a utility trailer through Glendale traffic or an Expedition loaded for a trip up to the White Mountains can push fluid temperatures high. If your truck has never had a transmission service, it’s worth having the fluid checked before problems start.
Our 4R70W Diagnostic Process
- Road test to confirm the symptom and when it occurs.
- Scan for codes and review live data, including EPC pressure and shift solenoid commands.
- Check fluid level and condition, and inspect for leaks.
- Inspect wiring, connectors and the shift linkage.
Some 4R70W problems, like a failed solenoid or wiring issue, can be repaired without a rebuild. We’ll recommend the least invasive fix that solves the problem.

Buying a Used Vehicle With a 4R70W?
Former police cars, fleet trucks and high-mileage F-150s are common on the used market. Before buying, check the fluid color and smell, watch for a delay when shifting into gear and make sure the truck shifts into overdrive smoothly on the highway. Our used car transmission check guide explains what else to look for, and we are happy to inspect a vehicle before you buy it.
4R70W Rebuild Cost
The price of a 4R70W rebuild depends on the vehicle, the condition of the case and hard parts, torque converter needs and any upgrades for towing or performance. Because many of these vehicles are older, we’ll also talk honestly about whether a rebuild, a used transmission or another option makes the most sense. Call for a free quote, and see our Ford transmission prices page for more information.
Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs. Financing is available.
4R70W Transmission FAQ
What’s the difference between the 4R70W and the AODE?
The 4R70W evolved from the AODE, with wider gear ratios and various updates for strength and drivability.
Can a 4R70W be upgraded for towing or performance?
Yes. Upgraded clutches, servo components, valve body modifications and better cooling are common choices.
My truck won’t shift into overdrive. Is it the transmission?
It could be, but it could also be a sensor, solenoid or overdrive switch issue. A diagnosis will tell.
