Buying a Used Car? Check the Transmission First

A transmission repair can be one of the largest bills a used car owner faces, so the transmission deserves a close look before you buy. Many problems give clues during a careful inspection and test drive. This guide explains what to look for when buying a used car, what questions to ask the seller, and when to bring the vehicle in for a professional look. It applies whether you are buying from a dealer lot on Bell Road or from a private seller across the Valley.

Start With the Paperwork

Research the specific transmission in that model. Some have known weak points. Our transmission problems pages cover many common units, such as Nissan CVT problems and Ford PowerShift shudder.

Check the Fluid

If the vehicle has a transmission dipstick, check the fluid using the owner’s manual procedure. Look for:

Very dark, burnt fluid on a vehicle with no service records is a warning sign. Fluid that looks freshly changed is fine, but ask why it was changed. See how to check transmission fluid and transmission fluid colors explained. Many newer vehicles have no dipstick, which is another reason a professional inspection helps.

Look Underneath

Check under the vehicle and on the ground where it has been parked for red or brown fluid. Look at the transmission pan, cooler lines, and the area where the transmission meets the engine for wetness. A freshly pressure-washed underside can hide leaks, so be cautious.

Start It Cold

Ask the seller not to start the vehicle before you arrive. Some problems show up mainly when cold. Shift into reverse and drive with your foot on the brake. Engagement should happen within a moment or two, with a gentle thump rather than a long delay or a hard bang. See delayed engagement.

Test Drive Checklist

  1. Accelerate gently from a stop and feel each upshift. Shifts should be smooth and timely.
  2. Accelerate more firmly and watch the tachometer for flares, where RPM jumps without matching speed.
  3. Drive at steady highway speeds and feel for shudder that resembles rumble strips.
  4. Coast down and feel the downshifts as you slow to a stop.
  5. Listen for whining, humming, or clunking.
  6. Test reverse on a slight incline.
  7. Drive long enough for the transmission to warm fully, since some problems appear only when hot.
  8. Watch for any warning light during and after the drive.

Check for Codes

A warning light that is off does not guarantee there are no stored codes. Some sellers clear codes before a sale. A professional scan can show stored codes, pending codes, and readiness monitors, which may reveal if codes were recently cleared. Scan data can also show how much the transmission computer is compensating for wear.

Get a Professional Inspection

A pre-purchase inspection by a transmission shop can catch issues a test drive might miss. At Sun West Transmissions, we can check fluid condition, scan for codes and data, inspect for leaks and mount problems, and road test the vehicle. Ask the seller if you can bring it in before buying. See our transmission diagnostic testing page. Inspection cost depends on the vehicle, so call for a quote.

If the Transmission Has a Problem

A transmission issue does not always mean walking away. Get a diagnosis and an estimate, then factor repair cost into your offer. Our guides on rebuild vs replace a transmission and transmission replacement cost can help you plan.

Used Car Transmission FAQ

Is high mileage a deal breaker?

Not necessarily. Maintenance history and how the vehicle was used matter as much as mileage.

Should I worry if the fluid was just changed?

Not by itself, but ask why. A recent service on a vehicle with symptoms deserves a closer look.

Can a test drive find every transmission problem?

No. Some issues are intermittent or show up only under heat or load, which is why a professional inspection helps.
