Nissan Frontier Transmission Repair in the West Valley
The Nissan Frontier is a tough midsize pickup that many Arizona owners keep for a very long time. You will see them on job sites, hauling dirt bikes into the desert and commuting on Grand Avenue. Unlike most modern Nissans, the Frontier uses conventional geared transmissions, not CVTs. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale offers Nissan Frontier transmission repair for automatic and manual trucks, plus four-wheel-drive service.
We are a dedicated transmission shop. Your Frontier gets a careful diagnosis and a free estimate before any work is done. We explain what we find in plain English, so you can make a confident decision about a truck you may plan to keep for many more years.
Frontier Transmissions by Generation
- Earlier Frontiers (late 1990s to 2004): four-speed automatics and five-speed manuals.
- Second generation (2005 to about 2019): the RE5R05A five-speed automatic, a rear-wheel-drive Jatco unit also used in other Nissan trucks and SUVs, plus five- and six-speed manuals.
- Later trucks (2020 onward): a nine-speed automatic paired with a newer V6 engine.
- Four-wheel-drive models: a part-time transfer case with electronic shift on many trims.
Our RE5R05A rebuild page covers the five-speed automatic in detail.
The Radiator Cooler Problem on Older Frontiers
One of the best-known issues on some second-generation Frontiers involves the transmission cooler built into the radiator. If the internal wall between the coolant side and the transmission fluid side fails, coolant can mix with transmission fluid. The result is often pink, milky fluid and serious damage to clutches, seals and the torque converter. Symptoms include shuddering, slipping and erratic shifting.
If you own an affected-era Frontier with the original radiator, consider having it inspected or replaced proactively. Many owners also add a separate external cooler. See our radiator replacement and auxiliary cooling system pages. If coolant contamination has already occurred, a fluid change alone usually will not fix the damage.
Other Common Frontier Transmission Problems
Harsh Shifts or Slipping
High-mileage RE5R05A units can develop harsh shifts, delayed engagement or slipping as clutches and the valve body wear. Old fluid and heat accelerate this.
Torque Converter Shudder
Shudder at light throttle and highway speeds may be torque converter related. Contaminated fluid makes it more likely. Read our torque converter shudder page for more.
Manual Transmission and Clutch Wear
Manual Frontiers may develop clutch slip, chatter or grinding. Our clutch replacement service covers these trucks, including the flywheel.
4WD Engagement Problems
Difficulty engaging 4WD or a flashing 4WD indicator may come from the transfer case actuator, wiring or the front axle. We check the whole system through our 4×4 service.
How We Diagnose a Frontier
- Scan for transmission, engine and 4WD codes.
- Inspect transmission fluid for level, condition and any sign of coolant contamination.
- Check the radiator and cooler for leaks or cross-contamination.
- Road test to verify shift quality, slip and converter behavior.
- Inspect the transfer case, axles and driveline.
- Explain the findings and give a free estimate.
Repair Options
Depending on what we find, your Frontier may need a fluid change, a radiator replacement, a valve body repair, a clutch job, a full transmission rebuild or a replacement unit. When coolant contamination has damaged the transmission, a rebuild or replacement combined with a new radiator and cooler is usually necessary.
Cost depends on the transmission, what failed, whether the radiator and converter also need replacement, and which parts are needed. We do not quote prices before diagnosis. Call for a free quote, and ask about financing.
Frontier Care Tips
- Check the transmission fluid for a milky or pink appearance.
- Keep the cooling system in good condition and inspect the radiator on older trucks.
- Service transmission, transfer case and differential fluids if you tow or go off-road.
- Use tow mode when pulling a trailer.
- Watch your temperature gauge on long summer climbs, such as the I-17 north of Anthem.
