The Toyota A750 is a five-speed automatic built by Aisin for Toyota’s rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs. It comes in two main versions: the A750E for two-wheel drive and the A750F for four-wheel drive. For many years it was the automatic behind the V6 in the Tacoma and 4Runner, and it also served in V8 Tundras, Sequoias, the FJ Cruiser and Lexus SUVs. In Arizona, where Tacomas and 4Runners are everywhere, the A750 is one of the transmissions we know best.

Sun West Transmissions in Glendale repairs and rebuilds the A750. Whether your truck is a daily commuter or a trail rig that spends weekends near Bartlett Lake or the Bradshaws, we can help.

Later Tundras and Sequoias moved to the six-speed AB60. We confirm your transmission before quoting.

A750 Design Basics

The A750 uses a compact planetary gear train, electronically controlled solenoids and a valve body that manages clutch pressure and torque converter lockup. It is a smooth, strong design that holds up well when the fluid is kept fresh and temperatures are kept in check. Like many Toyota units, it has no traditional dipstick in most applications, so fluid level is checked at a fill plug with the transmission at operating temperature.

Common A750 Problems

Torque Converter Lockup Shudder

A vibration or shudder at around 35 to 50 mph under light throttle is one of the most common A750 complaints. It usually involves the converter clutch and fluid condition. Fresh fluid sometimes improves it, but converter replacement may be needed if the friction material is worn. Our torque converter shudder page explains the symptom.

Delayed or Harsh Engagement

A delay when shifting into drive or reverse, or a clunk on engagement, can come from worn clutches, low fluid or valve body wear.

Solenoid Problems

Shift and lockup solenoids can fail or stick, causing harsh shifts, no lockup or codes. Replacing a solenoid can resolve the problem if the clutches are healthy.

Overheating from Towing and Off-Roading

Low-speed crawling on rocky trails, towing small campers and climbing in summer all add heat. Lift kits and larger tires change the effective gearing, which makes the transmission work harder and run hotter. Re-gearing the axles and adding a cooler can help.

Fluid Leaks

Pan gaskets, cooler lines and output seals can leak. On four-wheel-drive models, we also check the transfer case and its seals.

How We Diagnose an A750

We scan for codes, review live data such as lockup commands and fluid temperature, check fluid level at the fill plug at the correct temperature, inspect for leaks and road test the truck. We also ask about tire size, lift height and how you use the truck, because those details matter. Read more on our diagnosis page.

A750 Rebuild Process

  1. Remove the transmission and disassemble it completely.
  2. Clean and inspect the case, gear sets, drums and valve body.
  3. Replace clutches, steels, seals, gaskets and filter.
  4. Replace worn bushings, bearings and solenoids.
  5. Service or replace the torque converter.
  6. Flush the cooler, reinstall, fill, reset adaptives and road test.

Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs. We also service transfer cases and differentials while the truck is here.

A750 Rebuild Cost

The cost depends on the vehicle, damage found inside, the converter, solenoids and any cooler or driveline work. We give free estimates after diagnosis. See our Toyota Tacoma and Toyota 4Runner transmission repair pages for model-specific details. Financing is available.

A750 Tips for Arizona Truck Owners

Change the fluid on a severe-service schedule if you tow, off-road or carry heavy loads. Consider an auxiliary cooler for trail rigs. If you have added larger tires, look at re-gearing the axles. Our desert driving tips cover other ways to protect your transmission.

Toyota A750 Transmission FAQ

What is the difference between the A750E and A750F?

The A750E is the two-wheel-drive version, and the A750F is for four-wheel-drive vehicles with a transfer case. The internals are similar.

Why does my Tacoma shudder around 40 mph?

That is often torque converter lockup shudder. A diagnosis will confirm whether fluid service or converter replacement is needed.

Do bigger tires hurt the transmission?

They can. Larger tires raise the effective gearing, which adds load and heat. Re-gearing and cooling help offset it.
