4L80E Rebuild Cost at Sun West Transmissions

The GM 4L80E is a heavy-duty four-speed automatic built for work. Its design traces back to the legendary Turbo-Hydramatic 400, with an overdrive section and electronic controls added. GM used it from the early 1990s into the late 2000s in three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups, heavy-duty Suburbans, Express and Savana vans, motorhome chassis and some diesel applications. Thousands are still towing and hauling across Arizona.

At Sun West Transmissions in Glendale, our confirmed 4L80E rebuild cost starts at $2,995, including removal and installation. A billet torque converter adds about $300. Estimates are free; call (623) 473-9800.

What the Starting Price Covers

The starting price is for a standard rebuild of a 4L80E with normal wear: clutches, steels, seals, gaskets, bushings and filter, plus removal and installation. If disassembly reveals damaged hard parts, those are quoted separately, and we contact you before going further. See our 4L80E rebuild prices and 4L80E transmission rebuild pages for more.

Common 4L80E Problems

Slipping Under Load

Worn forward, direct or overdrive clutches cause slipping, especially when towing or climbing. Heat accelerates this wear. See 4L80E slipping.

Speed Sensor Codes and Erratic Shifting

The 4L80E relies on input and output speed sensors. Failed sensors, damaged wiring or connector problems can cause erratic shifts, harsh engagement or limp mode, often with codes related to speed signals. These are sometimes repaired without a rebuild.

Pressure Control Problems

The pressure control solenoid and valve body regulate line pressure. When they wear or fail, shifts become soft or harsh, and clutch wear speeds up.

Sprag and Planetary Wear

One-way clutches (sprags) and planetary gear sets can wear or fail, causing slipping in certain gears or noise.

Leaks

Front pump seals, cooler line fittings and pan gaskets can leak. Running a 4L80E low on fluid quickly damages clutches.

What Affects the Final Cost

Upgrades for Towing and Work Trucks

The 4L80E is already strong, but many West Valley owners use these trucks to tow heavy trailers in summer heat. During a rebuild, we can discuss upgrades such as additional clutch capacity, improved valve body calibration and stronger converter options. Adding an auxiliary cooler is one of the most effective ways to protect a towing 4L80E. Read transmission care for work trucks.

Arizona Conditions and the 4L80E

Heavy-duty trucks in the Phoenix area tow boats to the lakes, trailers up I-17 and equipment to job sites. Long pulls in triple-digit heat raise fluid temperature quickly. Fluid that’s been cooked turns dark and smells burnt, and the clutches it was protecting wear out fast. Keeping the fluid fresh, using tow/haul mode and monitoring temperature all help a 4L80E last.

If your 4L80E starts slipping while towing, pull over safely, let it cool and call us. Pulling a heavy load with a slipping transmission can turn a straightforward rebuild into a much bigger job.

Rebuild vs. Used

Used 4L80E units are available, but most come out of high-mileage work trucks with unknown service histories. A rebuild gives you new wear parts, an inspection of every hard part and the chance to add upgrades. For a truck that works, a rebuild is usually the better long-term value.

Before recommending a rebuild, we diagnose the 4L80E the same way we would any transmission. We check fluid level and condition, scan for codes, look at live data including input and output speed readings and commanded pressure, and road test when it is safe. Because this transmission is so sensitive to its speed sensors and wiring, ruling out electrical faults first can save you from an unnecessary teardown.

Motorhome owners should know that 4L80E units in Class A and Class C chassis often work harder than those in pickups, carrying heavy weight for long distances. Regular fluid service and good cooling are especially important for these vehicles.

Warranty and Financing

Qualifying 4L80E rebuilds come with our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs. See our warranty page, and ask about financing.

4L80E Rebuild Cost FAQ

Does the $2,995 starting price include removal and installation?

Yes. Additional damaged parts, upgrades or a billet converter are quoted separately.

Can a 4L80E problem be just a sensor?

Sometimes. Speed sensor and wiring faults can cause erratic shifting without internal damage. We diagnose before recommending a rebuild.

Is the 4L80E better than the 4L60E?

The 4L80E is the heavier-duty transmission. For a comparison with GM’s lighter unit, see our 4L60E rebuild cost page.
