The Eight-Speed in Ram Half-Tons
Starting in the 2013 model year, Ram moved its 1500 pickups to an eight-speed automatic based on the ZF 8HP design. Depending on the engine and year, Ram trucks use versions known as the 845RE, 8HP70 or 8HP75, and related units appear in Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles as well. The eight-speed brought big gains in fuel economy and towing smoothness, and it is generally a strong transmission. Still, as these trucks rack up miles in Arizona heat, we see some recurring complaints.
Common Ram 1500 8-Speed Problems
Harsh or Erratic Shifts
Owners describe harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts, clunks when slowing to a stop, and occasional hard downshifts. In many cases these trace back to software calibration or adaptive values rather than broken parts. Ram and its parent company have released updates for various model years to improve shift quality. See TCM programming.
Hesitation and Gear Hunting
With eight closely spaced gears, the transmission can shift frequently. Some trucks hesitate when accelerating from low speed or hunt between gears on grades or while towing. Adaptive learning and software are common factors, and so is driving style.
Mechatronic Unit Problems
The 8HP design uses a mechatronic unit inside the transmission that combines the control module and valve body. Faults in this unit can cause harsh shifts, limp mode and a variety of codes. Electrical connector issues are also possible. Diagnosis needs proper scan tools and procedures.
Fluid Leaks
The eight-speed uses a pan with an integrated filter. Leaks at the pan, the electrical connector sleeve or cooler lines can lower the fluid level over time. Because there is no conventional dipstick, low fluid can go unnoticed until shifting suffers.
Torque Converter Shudder
A worn converter clutch or degraded fluid can cause vibration at steady speeds. Heat from towing and summer driving speeds up fluid breakdown. See torque converter shudder.
Rotary Shifter and Park Issues
Many Ram 1500s use a rotary shift dial. Electrical or software issues with the shifter can cause warnings, failure to engage park or other shifting oddities. Some of these have been addressed through recalls or updates.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Bang or clunk when shifting into drive or reverse.
- Harsh upshifts or downshifts, especially when warm.
- Slipping or flare between gears.
- Limp mode with a warning message.
- Drips of red fluid under the truck.
- Vibration at highway speed under light throttle.
What You Can Safely Check
Note when the problem happens: cold or hot, empty or towing, at what speed. Look for leaks where you park. Check for open recalls through a Ram dealer or the manufacturer’s lookup. Do not try to add fluid without the correct fill procedure, since the eight-speed requires the level to be set at a specific temperature. Make sure the rotary shifter fully registers park before leaving the truck.
How Sun West Diagnoses the 8-Speed
We road test, scan for codes and review adaptive values, clutch fill data, converter slip and fluid temperature. We check the software level and inspect for leaks at the pan and connector sleeve. We verify fluid level using the proper procedure. That tells us whether the fix is software, a leak, the mechatronic unit or internal wear. See computer transmission diagnostics.
Repair Options
- Software update and adaptive relearn.
- Leak repair, including pan and connector sleeve replacement.
- Fluid service with the correct fluid and fill procedure.
- Mechatronic unit repair or replacement with proper programming.
- Rebuild for internal wear. See our 845RE rebuild page and 8HP / 850RE page.
For truck-specific information, see Ram 1500 transmission repair.
What It Costs
Cost depends on the model year, engine, the eight-speed version and what diagnosis shows. A software update is a very different job from a mechatronic replacement or a rebuild. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote, and see our Ram transmission prices page for how pricing works. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs.
When to Stop Driving
If the truck slips, enters limp mode while towing, leaks fluid steadily or fails to hold park, stop and have it checked. A truck that does not reliably stay in park is a serious safety risk, so use the parking brake until it is fixed.
Ram 1500 8-Speed Problems: FAQ
Is the Ram 8-speed a reliable transmission?
Generally yes. Most complaints involve shift quality, software or leaks rather than catastrophic failure.
Can I tow with my Ram 8-speed if it shifts harshly?
Get it diagnosed first. Towing adds heat and load that can make a small problem worse.
Does the eight-speed need fluid changes?
Heat and towing in Arizona are severe conditions. Periodic service is a good idea. See how often to change transmission fluid.
