The Ford 6F35 Six-Speed Transaxle

The 6F35 is a six-speed front-wheel-drive automatic transaxle that Ford introduced in the late 2000s. It was developed as part of a joint program with GM, whose version is the 6T40. Ford used the 6F35 mainly behind four-cylinder engines, including turbocharged EcoBoost engines, in compact and midsize cars and crossovers.

The vehicles we see most often with a 6F35 include the Ford Escape, Fusion and Transit Connect, along with related Mercury, Lincoln and Mazda models from the same era. These are popular daily drivers and rideshare vehicles in the Valley, and they pile on miles quickly. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses 6F35 problems and performs complete 6F35 transmission rebuild work when it’s needed.

Why the 6F35 Is a Commuter Workhorse

The 6F35 was designed to improve fuel economy compared to older four- and five-speed transaxles. Six closely spaced gears let small engines stay in their efficient range, which is ideal for daily commuting. However, commuter use in the Phoenix area means hot stop-and-go traffic, short trips and long idle times with the A/C running. All of that adds heat and wear.

Rideshare and delivery drivers put especially heavy demands on these vehicles. Our transmission care for rideshare drivers page has tips for drivers who rely on their vehicles for income.

Common 6F35 Problems

Harsh or Delayed Shifts

Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts, clunky downshifts and delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse are common complaints. Causes include worn clutches, valve body or solenoid body problems, low fluid or outdated software. Ford released software updates for some shift quality concerns.

Slipping and Flare

RPM flare between gears or slipping under acceleration usually means clutch wear or internal pressure loss.

Torque Converter Shudder

A vibration at light throttle and steady speed may come from the torque converter clutch or old fluid.

Leaks and Low Fluid

Leaks from axle seals, cooler lines, the pan or case can lower fluid levels. Because many 6F35 vehicles lack a convenient dipstick, owners often don’t notice low fluid until shifting gets worse.

Overheating

Thermal management parts, cooling system problems and hard use in heat can all lead to high fluid temperatures, which accelerate wear.

Electrical and Control Faults

Shift solenoid codes, speed sensor codes and limp mode can come from the solenoid body, sensors, wiring or control module.

All-Wheel-Drive Escapes

On all-wheel-drive Escapes, the 6F35 works with a power transfer unit that sends power to the rear wheels. PTU leaks and failures are common and can produce noises, vibrations or fluid leaks that drivers might mistake for transmission problems. We check the PTU, rear drive unit and axles as part of diagnosis. Our differential repair and CV axle replacement services cover these related components.

Our 6F35 Diagnostic Process

  1. Road test to confirm the symptom and when it occurs.
  2. Code scan and live data review, including solenoid commands, slip and temperature.
  3. Fluid level check using Ford’s procedure, plus a fluid condition inspection.
  4. Check for software updates and service bulletins.
  5. Inspection of the PTU, axles, mounts and wiring.

What Our 6F35 Rebuild Includes

When to Stop Driving

If the transmission suddenly will not move, slips badly, smells burnt or shows a flashing warning, pull over somewhere safe and avoid driving further. Continuing to drive a slipping transaxle generates heat and debris that can damage the torque converter, differential and other parts, turning a moderate repair into a much bigger one. A short trip to a shop is far better than a long commute on a failing unit.

6F35 Rebuild Cost

The cost of a 6F35 rebuild depends on the vehicle, front-wheel or all-wheel drive, internal damage, torque converter condition and whether the solenoid body or other controls need replacement. For older, high-mileage vehicles, we’ll compare a rebuild with options like a quality used transmission or a remanufactured unit. Call for a free quote.

Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs. Financing is available. See our Ford Escape transmission repair page for model-specific information.

6F35 Transmission FAQ

Is the 6F35 the same as the GM 6T40?

They come from the same joint design program, but Ford and GM versions use different controls, calibrations and some parts.

Can a software update fix my Escape’s harsh shifts?

Sometimes. If the internal parts are healthy, an update and relearn may improve shift quality.

Why is my Escape leaking fluid under the front of the vehicle?

On all-wheel-drive models, the power transfer unit is a common leak source. We’ll identify the source during inspection.
