Honda’s six-speed automatic is used in many Honda and Acura vehicles with V6 engines, from family minivans to midsize trucks and luxury SUVs. Unlike most automatics, Honda’s traditional automatic transmissions do not use planetary gear sets. Instead, they use parallel shafts with individual gears and a hydraulic clutch for each gear, much like an automated manual transmission. This design is smooth and efficient, but it also means Honda automatics have their own set of common problems and service needs.

Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses, repairs and rebuilds Honda and Acura six-speed automatics. We understand how they are built and what they need.

Vehicles with the Honda 6-Speed Automatic

Honda’s six-speed automatic has been used in many V6 models during the 2010s, including versions of:

Honda used different transmissions in different years and trims, including a nine-speed and a ten-speed in some later models, and CVTs in many four-cylinder vehicles. We confirm which transmission your vehicle has before ordering parts. For Honda CVTs, see our Honda CVT page.

What Makes Honda Automatics Different

Each forward gear on a Honda parallel-shaft automatic has its own clutch pack. Shifts happen when one clutch releases and another applies, controlled by linear solenoids and the transmission computer. Clean fluid and accurate pressure control are essential. Honda specifies its own ATF type, and using the wrong fluid is a common cause of shift complaints on these units.

Common Honda 6-Speed Problems

Torque Converter Judder

Many owners notice a judder or shudder at moderate speeds under light throttle, often feeling like driving over rumble strips. Honda has issued service information for some vehicles that combines a software update with fluid service. If the judder continues, converter or internal repair may be needed. Our torque converter shudder page explains the symptom.

Harsh or Delayed Shifts

A hard 2-3 shift, a bump when slowing or a delay in engagement can come from fluid condition, solenoids or worn clutch packs.

Slipping and Flare

An RPM jump between gears indicates a clutch is not applying fully. At higher mileage, especially in heavy vehicles like the Pilot and Odyssey, clutch wear becomes more common.

Solenoid and Sensor Faults

Failed linear solenoids, pressure switches or speed sensors can cause warning lights, erratic shifting or a fail-safe mode.

Heat-Related Wear

Minivans loaded with passengers and SUVs towing small trailers in Arizona summer put real stress on the transmission. Heat breaks down fluid and accelerates clutch wear.

How We Diagnose a Honda 6-Speed

We scan the transmission and engine computers, check for software updates, review live data, check fluid level and condition and road test the vehicle. We also check whether the correct Honda fluid is in the transmission. Many shift-quality complaints improve with the right software and fluid, while others need solenoid or internal repair. Honda 6-Speed Rebuild Process

  1. Remove the transmission and disassemble it completely.
  2. Clean and inspect shafts, gears, bearings, clutch drums and the valve body.
  3. Replace clutches, steels, seals, O-rings, gaskets and filter.
  4. Replace worn bearings, solenoids and hard parts as needed.
  5. Service or replace the torque converter and flush the cooler.
  6. Reinstall, fill with the correct Honda fluid, perform any required learning procedure and road test.

Qualifying rebuilds come with our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty, with no deductible on covered repairs.

Honda 6-Speed Rebuild Cost

Cost depends on the vehicle, the damage found, the converter and solenoids. A remanufactured unit may also be an option. We give free estimates after diagnosis. See our Honda Pilot and Honda transmission problems pages for more. Financing is available.

Keeping Your Honda Shifting Smoothly

Follow the maintenance minder, but remember that Arizona heat and heavy loads count as severe conditions. Use genuine Honda fluid or an exact equivalent, and have judder or harsh shifts checked early before clutch damage builds up. Our flush vs. fluid change article explains which service is right for your vehicle.

Honda 6-Speed Transmission FAQ

Why does my Odyssey or Pilot judder at 40 mph?

Converter judder is a known complaint on some models. A software update and fluid service may help, but a diagnosis is needed to confirm the cause.

Can I use universal ATF in my Honda?

We recommend Honda’s specified fluid. Honda transmissions are sensitive to fluid type.

Is a Honda automatic worth rebuilding?

For many vehicles, yes. Honda engines and bodies often last a long time, so a rebuilt transmission can add years of use.
