Honda began moving many of its four-cylinder models to continuously variable transmissions in the 2010s. Today, a Honda CVT is found in some of the most popular cars and crossovers on Valley roads, including the Civic, Accord, CR-V and HR-V. Honda’s CVTs are generally smooth and efficient, and most use a torque converter for a more natural feel when pulling away. Like all CVTs, though, they rely on clean fluid and precise pressure control, and Arizona’s heat and traffic can expose weaknesses.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses and repairs Honda CVTs. We will tell you whether your issue is likely a software, fluid or component problem, or whether the transmission needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
Honda Models with a CVT
- Honda Civic, many trims from the mid-2010s onward
- Honda Accord with four-cylinder engines in many years
- Honda CR-V in many years
- Honda HR-V and Honda Fit
- Honda Insight and some other models
Honda has used different CVT designs across these models, and some trims used conventional automatics or manuals instead. We verify the exact transmission before quoting. For V6 Hondas, see our Honda 6-speed page.
How a Honda CVT Works
Instead of fixed gears, a CVT uses a steel push belt running between two pulleys whose widths change to vary the ratio. The transmission computer controls pulley pressure to keep the belt clamped without slipping. A torque converter and forward and reverse clutches handle engagement. Because everything depends on hydraulic pressure and the friction characteristics of the fluid, using Honda’s specified CVT fluid is critical. Learn more in our CVT vs. automatic guide.
Common Honda CVT Complaints
Judder or Shudder at Low Speed
Some Honda CVTs develop a judder when accelerating gently from low speed or at light cruising throttle. Honda has released software updates for certain models to address this, often combined with a fluid change. If the judder persists, internal repair may be needed.
Whining or Droning Noise
A whine that rises with speed can come from the belt, pulleys, bearings or the oil pump. Noise that gets louder over time is a warning sign of internal wear.
Hesitation and Delayed Engagement
A delay when shifting into drive or reverse, or a lag before the car accelerates, can relate to fluid level, fluid condition, clutches or control issues.
Warning Lights and Fail-Safe Mode
When the transmission computer detects slippage or a sensor fault, it may set a warning light and limit power. Our transmission warning light page explains what to do.
Fluid Breakdown in the Heat
CVT fluid works hard in Phoenix summers. Stop-and-go driving, rideshare use and long idling in the heat break it down faster, which affects belt grip and clutch feel.
How We Diagnose a Honda CVT
We scan the transmission and engine computers, check for software updates, review live data such as pulley ratio and slip values, check fluid level and condition and road test the car. If there is debris in the fluid, internal wear is likely. If the fluid is clean and the issue is software related, an update may be the answer. Read more about our diagnostic testing.

Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs. Our CVT transmission rebuild page covers CVTs in general.
Honda CVT Repair Cost
Cost depends on the model, whether the fix is software, fluid, a component or internal repair, and on parts availability. We provide free estimates after diagnosis. For more detail on what drives CVT pricing, see our CVT repair cost guide. Model-specific pages include Honda CR-V and Honda Accord. Financing is available.
Helping Your Honda CVT Last
Service the CVT fluid on a schedule that fits Arizona driving, accelerate smoothly, avoid towing beyond the vehicle’s ratings and have any new noise or judder checked early. Rideshare drivers in particular should read our rideshare transmission care guide.
Honda CVT FAQ
Is it normal for a CVT to sound different from an automatic?
Yes. A CVT can hold steady RPM while accelerating, which feels different. A whine or grinding sound that is new or growing louder is not normal.
Can a software update fix my Honda CVT judder?
For some models, Honda software updates and fresh fluid improve judder. If wear is present, repair is still needed.
Can a Honda CVT be rebuilt?
Some can, depending on the model and parts availability. In other cases, replacement is the more reliable option. We will explain which applies to your car.
