What a Ford Transmission Rebuild Costs, and Why It Varies
Ford has used a wide range of automatic transmissions over the years, from older four-speeds in Rangers and Explorers to ten-speeds in today’s F-150s, Expeditions and Mustangs. Each design has its own parts, labor requirements and typical failures. That’s why there isn’t one answer to “how much does a Ford transmission rebuild cost?” The price depends on which transmission you have, how it failed and what the vehicle needs to get it out and back in.
At Sun West Transmissions in Glendale, we quote Ford rebuilds after inspection, and estimates are free. This page explains what drives the Ford transmission rebuild cost so you know what to expect. Call (623) 473-9800 to talk about your vehicle.

The Main Cost Factors
Transmission Design
A four-speed rear-wheel-drive unit has fewer parts than a ten-speed. Newer Ford transmissions use more clutch packs, more solenoids and more complex valve bodies. Heavy-duty units like the 5R110W and 6R140 use larger, stronger components.
Extent of Damage
A transmission caught early may only need wear parts. One that was driven while slipping can have damaged drums, gear sets, shafts and pumps. Each hard part adds cost, which is the strongest argument for getting symptoms checked quickly.
Valve Body and Solenoid Body
Many Ford shifting complaints come from the valve body or solenoid pack. On some transmissions, a replacement solenoid body must be programmed with its own calibration data. Sometimes the valve body can be repaired without a full rebuild.
Torque Converter
The converter is normally replaced or remanufactured during a rebuild, since debris collects inside it. Heavy-duty converters for towing cost more.
Labor Access
Removal and installation vary greatly. A two-wheel-drive F-150 is a different job from a four-wheel-drive Super Duty or an all-wheel-drive Edge, where axles, subframes and transfer units are involved.
Programming
Most modern Fords need the transmission control software updated or adaptive tables reset after a rebuild. We handle the programming and relearn steps as part of the job, so the rebuilt transmission shifts the way it should from day one.
Cooling
The cooler and lines must be flushed or replaced after a failure. Trucks that tow in Arizona often benefit from an auxiliary cooler.
Repair Before Rebuild
Not every Ford shifting problem requires a rebuild. Harsh shifts on some six- and ten-speeds can be improved with a software update and adaptive relearn. Solenoid body or valve body faults may be repaired separately. Wiring and sensor problems can mimic internal failure. We diagnose first so you pay for the right repair. Learn more about our process on the how transmission shops diagnose problems page.
Arizona Conditions and Ford Transmissions
F-150s, Super Duties and Expeditions are among the most popular tow vehicles in the Valley. Pulling boats, campers and work trailers in summer heat breaks down fluid and wears clutches faster. Following the severe-service fluid schedule, using tow/haul mode and keeping cooling healthy are the best ways to protect a Ford automatic here.

Because the cost varies widely by transmission model and damage. An inspection lets us give you an accurate, written quote.
Is my 10-speed’s harsh shifting a rebuild?
Not necessarily. Some cases respond to software updates and adaptive relearns. Diagnosis tells us.
Do you rebuild Ford diesel transmissions?
Yes, including the 5R110W TorqShift. Call (623) 473-9800 with your truck details.
