The 6F55: Built for EcoBoost Torque
The 6F55 is the heavy-duty version of Ford’s front-wheel-drive six-speed transaxle family. It’s closely related to the 6F50, but Ford strengthened it to handle the extra torque of its twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engines. Turbocharged engines produce strong torque at low RPM, and that puts more load on the transmission’s clutches and gears than a naturally aspirated V6 of similar size.
Depending on year and model, the 6F55 is found in performance and EcoBoost versions of vehicles like the Ford Taurus SHO, Explorer Sport, Flex, Edge Sport and Police Interceptor models, along with several Lincoln models such as the MKS and MKT. Most are all-wheel drive. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses and repairs these transaxles and offers complete 6F55 transmission rebuild service.
Turbo Power and Transmission Wear
EcoBoost engines make it easy to drive aggressively, and many owners enjoy the quick acceleration. Each hard launch and full-throttle merge onto Loop 101 puts a high load on the transmission. Add Phoenix summer temperatures, the extra underhood heat from turbochargers and the weight of a three-row SUV, and fluid temperatures can climb quickly.
Engine tuning is another factor. Some EcoBoost owners add power with tunes or modifications, which can push the 6F55 past the torque it was calibrated for. If your vehicle has been modified, let us know during diagnosis, because it affects both the cause of the problem and the right repair strategy.
Common 6F55 Symptoms
Slipping Under Hard Acceleration
Slipping or RPM flare during full-throttle acceleration is often the first sign that clutches are wearing, especially in tuned or high-mileage vehicles.
Harsh or Inconsistent Shifts
Harsh engagement, clunky downshifts and shift timing that changes from day to day can come from worn clutches, valve body wear, solenoid body issues or software calibration.
Shudder
A vibration at light throttle may involve the torque converter clutch or fluid condition.
Leaks and Burning Smells
Transmission leaks near the hot exhaust and turbo areas can cause a burning smell. On AWD models, the power transfer unit is another common leak source.
Warning Lights
Shift solenoid, gear ratio and speed sensor codes can trigger limp mode or a check engine light. You can learn more on our check engine light and shifting problems page.
The PTU Factor
Because most 6F55 vehicles are all-wheel drive, the power transfer unit plays a big role. It sits close to the exhaust and turbocharger heat, and its fluid can break down over time. PTU problems can cause noises, leaks, burning smells and vibrations that may be mistaken for transmission trouble. We check the PTU and rear drive unit during diagnosis and can service them through our 4×4 and AWD service.
Our Diagnostic Process
- Road test to verify the symptom, including under acceleration where safe.
- Code scan and live data review of slip, gear commands, pressure control and fluid temperature.
- Fluid level and condition check using Ford’s procedure.
- Inspection of the PTU, rear drive unit, axles, mounts and wiring.
- Review of tuning, modifications and software updates.
What’s Included in Our 6F55 Rebuild
- Removal and complete disassembly of the transaxle.
- Cleaning and inspection of all parts, including the final drive and differential.
- New clutches, steels, seals, gaskets and filter.
- Replacement of worn bushings, bearings and damaged hard parts.
- Valve body and solenoid body service or replacement.
- Torque converter evaluation and replacement as needed.

For modified vehicles, we can talk through transmission upgrades and added cooling that help a rebuilt 6F55 hold up to extra power.
6F55 Rebuild Cost
The cost of a 6F55 rebuild depends on the vehicle, the internal damage, torque converter condition, control component needs, AWD components and any upgrades. Transverse EcoBoost installations can be labor intensive due to tight packaging around the turbochargers. Call for a free quote, and see our Ford transmission rebuild cost guide.
Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, and financing is available. Learn more about why transmissions overheat and how to prevent it.
Keeping a 6F55 Healthy in the Desert
Have the transmission and PTU fluids checked regularly, fix leaks promptly and keep the engine cooling system in top shape. If you drive hard or tow, shorten your fluid service interval. Letting the engine idle for a minute after a hard drive can also help turbos and surrounding components cool down.
6F55 Transmission FAQ
What’s the difference between the 6F50 and the 6F55?
The 6F55 is built with upgraded internal parts to handle EcoBoost torque. Parts are not always interchangeable.
Will a tune damage my transmission?
Extra torque increases clutch wear, especially in heat. Proper calibration and upgrades reduce the risk.
Why does my Taurus SHO smell like something burning?
Leaks from the transmission or PTU near hot exhaust parts are common causes. Have it inspected promptly.
