The JF016E is a second-generation continuously variable transmission built by Jatco for Nissan. Nissan refers to it as part of its Xtronic CVT family, and it replaced the earlier JF011E in several high-volume models during the 2010s. Jatco designed it to be lighter, with reduced internal friction and a wider ratio range for better fuel economy. It also introduced simulated “step” shifts during harder acceleration so the car feels more like a conventional automatic. The Altima and Rogue are the vehicles most West Valley drivers know it from.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses, repairs and rebuilds the JF016E. We take the time to separate software and fluid issues from internal damage, so you can make an informed decision.
Vehicles with the JF016E
- Nissan Altima with the 2.5L engine, in many years of the 2010s
- Nissan Rogue, second generation
- Other Nissan and Infiniti models in certain years and engines
Nissan’s larger V6 crossovers and sedans, such as the Murano, Pathfinder and Maxima, generally use the closely related JF017E, and smaller cars use different Jatco units. Because the designations overlap, we confirm your exact CVT using the vehicle’s build data. For the older generation, see our JF011E page.
What Changed from the JF011E
The JF016E uses a revised belt and pulley design, a more efficient oil pump and updated control strategies, including simulated stepped shifts. These changes improved efficiency, but they also made the transmission more sensitive to fluid quality and software calibration. Many shift-feel complaints on this unit relate to control logic as much as to mechanical wear.
Common JF016E Problems
Judder on Light Acceleration
Drivers often report a judder or shudder when accelerating gently from 20 to 40 mph. Causes include torque converter lockup control, fluid condition and software. Nissan released updates for some vehicles. If the judder persists after updates and fresh fluid, internal repair may be needed.
Hesitation and Lurching
A delay before the car responds, followed by a sudden surge, can feel unsafe in traffic. It can come from software, sensors, valve body issues or belt slip. Our delayed engagement page explains related symptoms.
Whine and Bearing Noise
A whine or howl that increases with speed usually means internal wear, such as pulley bearings. Once noise develops, it rarely improves with fluid service.
Overheating and Power Reduction
In extreme heat, the CVT may limit engine power to protect itself. Drivers may notice weak acceleration on the freeway during summer afternoons. Read how Arizona heat affects your transmission.
Ratio Control Codes
Faults in pressure sensors, the step motor or valve body can set codes and trigger a fail-safe mode. Sensor replacement may solve the issue if internal parts are healthy.
How We Diagnose a JF016E
We scan for codes, check software level, review live data including pulley ratio, line pressure and fluid temperature, check fluid level and condition and road test the car. We check for metal debris, which tells us whether the belt or bearings are wearing. Our diagnosis guide explains the process.
JF016E Repair Options
- Software update and CVT learning procedure
- Fluid service with Nissan’s specified CVT fluid
- Sensor, step motor or valve body repair
- Rebuild with new bearings and wear parts when parts and condition allow
- Replacement with a remanufactured or new CVT
Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs. It is also worth checking with a Nissan dealer about any extended coverage that may apply to your vehicle.
JF016E Repair Cost
Cost depends on whether the fix is software, fluid, a component, a rebuild or a replacement, and on parts availability. We provide free estimates after diagnosis. See our Nissan Altima and Nissan Rogue transmission repair pages, and our CVT repair cost guide. Financing is available.
Making a Nissan CVT Last Longer
Change the CVT fluid on a schedule suited to Arizona driving, using the correct Nissan fluid. Accelerate smoothly, avoid hard launches and do not ignore early signs like judder or a new whine. For drivers who spend all day in traffic, an external cooler can help keep temperatures in check.
Nissan JF016E CVT FAQ
Why does my Rogue feel like it is shifting gears?
The JF016E uses simulated step shifts during harder acceleration to feel more like a conventional automatic. That is normal behavior.
Can the JF016E be rebuilt?
In many cases, yes, depending on the damage and parts availability. Sometimes replacement is the more reliable choice.
Is it safe to drive with a CVT that lurches?
Unpredictable lurching or loss of power in traffic is a safety concern. Have it diagnosed promptly and avoid heavy traffic until then.
