The Ford E-Series, long known as the Econoline, served as America’s work van for decades. Passenger and cargo versions were sold for many years, and the cutaway and stripped-chassis versions continue to underpin box trucks, shuttle buses, ambulances and Class C motorhomes. Plenty of older E-Series vans still work hard in the Valley, and many snowbirds arrive each winter in E-Series-based RVs. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale repairs E-Series transmissions for all of them.

E-Series Transmissions Over the Years

The E-Series used Ford’s rear-wheel-drive truck transmissions. Depending on year, weight rating and engine, yours may have:

We confirm your exact transmission with the VIN and the vehicle’s certification label.

Why E-Series Transmissions Wear Out

E-Series vans and cutaways almost always carry heavy loads. A box truck may weigh near its maximum rating all day, a shuttle bus stops constantly, and a Class C motorhome climbs long grades on I-17 and I-40 with a full load of water and supplies. The engine sits partly inside the cab under a cover, which limits airflow around the transmission. Add Arizona heat, and fluid temperatures can run high for hours. Heat breaks down fluid and wears clutches, bands and the torque converter.

Common E-Series Transmission Problems

Overheating and slipping

Slipping on grades or under load is the most common E-Series complaint. It usually means worn clutches from heat and weight. See transmission slipping.

E4OD and 4R100 shift problems

Older heavy-duty four-speeds can develop harsh shifts, delayed engagement, overdrive problems and solenoid or sensor faults. Torque converter clutch problems are also common.

5R110W issues

The TorqShift is a strong unit but can suffer converter problems, harsh shifts and internal wear on hard-working vans. Read Ford 5R110W problems.

Cooler and line leaks

Long cooler lines, older rubber hoses and corroded fittings are common leak points on aging vans. A low-fluid van overheats quickly.

RV and Motorhome Owners

Many Class C motorhomes are built on E-Series cutaway chassis. These vehicles often sit for months, then make long trips with heavy loads. Seals can dry out during storage, and fluid ages even when the vehicle is parked. Before a long trip, have the transmission fluid and cooling system checked. If your RV starts slipping on a grade, pull over safely and let it cool before continuing gently. Our towing and your transmission article also applies to heavy motorhomes, especially if you tow a car behind.

Warning Signs

  4. Inspect the driveshaft and rear axle for related problems
  5. Explain findings and give you a free estimate

An auxiliary cooling system is one of the best upgrades for heavily loaded E-Series vans and motorhomes. We can also discuss transmission upgrades.

E-Series Transmission Cost

Cost depends on the transmission type, the vehicle’s configuration and what we find. Cutaways with bodies or motorhome conversions can require more labor than a standard van. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote, and ask about financing. For businesses, see our fleet transmission service page.
