The Allison 1000 Behind the Duramax

When GM launched the Duramax diesel in its heavy-duty pickups in the early 2000s, it paired the engine with an Allison 1000 automatic transmission. Allison is known for commercial and heavy-duty transmissions, and the 1000 series brought that durability to the 2500 and 3500 series Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. Early versions were five-speeds, and GM moved to a six-speed version in the mid-2000s. Later Duramax trucks adopted a ten-speed Allison-branded transmission, which is a different design.

The Allison 1000 has also been used in some medium-duty trucks, motorhome chassis and commercial vehicles. Around Phoenix, most of the Allisons we see are in Duramax pickups that tow fifth-wheels, horse trailers, equipment and boats. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale handles diesel transmission work, including complete Allison 1000 transmission rebuild service.

Strong, but Not Invincible

The Allison 1000 has an excellent reputation, and many reach high mileage with regular service. Its weak spots usually show up when it’s pushed beyond stock conditions or when maintenance is neglected. The most common contributors to Allison failures we see include:

Common Allison 1000 Symptoms

Slipping Under Load

Slipping when towing or accelerating hard, especially in upper gears, is a classic sign of clutch wear. Tuned trucks often show this first because the engine is making more torque than the clutches were designed to hold.

Harsh or Erratic Shifts

Harsh shifts, flare or shift timing problems can come from solenoids, adaptive learning, worn clutches or internal leaks.

Limp Mode

The control module may lock the transmission in a single gear to protect it when it detects a slip ratio problem or electrical fault. Codes such as P0700, P0730 or solenoid circuit codes are common clues.

Torque Converter Issues

Shudder, overheating or converter clutch codes can point to converter wear or lockup control problems.

Leaks

Cooler lines, the pan, connectors and seals can leak. Low fluid on a heavy-duty diesel truck under load can cause serious damage quickly.

Diesel Diagnosis Done Right

Every Allison 1000 we see starts with a full diagnostic process: a road test, ideally under load, a scan of the transmission and engine modules, live data review, a fluid level and condition check, and an inspection of cooler lines and wiring. We’ll also ask about tuning and modifications, since that information matters for both diagnosis and rebuild recommendations.

If the issue is a solenoid, sensor or wiring repair, we’ll fix that. If the clutches or hard parts are damaged, we’ll explain the findings and the rebuild options.

Our Allison 1000 Rebuild

  1. Remove the transmission and fully disassemble it.
  2. Clean and inspect clutch packs, pistons, planetary gear sets, shafts and the case.
  3. Install new clutches, steels, seals, gaskets and filters.
  4. Replace worn bushings, bearings and damaged hard parts.
  5. Inspect the control valve body and solenoids, replacing as needed.
  6. Evaluate and replace or upgrade the torque converter.
  7. Flush coolers and lines, fill with the correct fluid, perform relearns and road test.

Upgrades for Towing and Tuned Trucks

If your truck is tuned or tows heavy loads, a stock rebuild may not hold up. We can discuss upgraded clutch packs, a heavy-duty torque converter, better cooling with an auxiliary cooler and proper transmission calibration. Allison 1000 Rebuild Cost

The cost of an Allison 1000 rebuild depends on the truck’s year and configuration, the extent of internal damage, torque converter needs and any upgrades. Diesel transmission work generally involves more labor than gas trucks. Call us for a free quote based on your truck. Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, and financing is available. See our diesel transmission rebuild cost guide for more.

Allison 1000 Transmission FAQ

Will a tuner hurt my Allison?

Added power can exceed the transmission’s clutch capacity, especially when towing. If you tune, consider upgrades and proper transmission calibration.

How often should I service my Allison in Arizona?

Towing in heat counts as severe service. Follow the severe schedule and consider more frequent fluid service.

Is limp mode dangerous?

It’s a protective mode. Drive gently to a safe place and have it checked soon rather than continuing to tow.
