Chevy Camaro Transmission Repair in Glendale, AZ
Sun West Transmissions — Glendale, AZ. Free estimates, honest diagnosis and a 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty on qualifying rebuilds and replacements.
Few cars inspire the loyalty of the Chevy Camaro. In the Phoenix area you will see everything from restored first-generation cars at weekend car shows to late-model SS and ZL1 coupes heading out for a desert drive. Whatever generation you own, the transmission takes a beating from high horsepower, hard launches and summer heat. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale repairs, rebuilds and upgrades Camaro automatics and manuals, old and new.
Classic Camaro Transmissions
Early Camaros used GM’s well-known three-speed automatics, the TH350 and the heavy-duty TH400, along with the two-speed Powerglide on some cars. Later cars of the 1980s brought the four-speed overdrive 700R4. These hydraulic units are simple and rebuildable, and many owners upgrade them for more horsepower or better highway cruising. If you are restoring or modifying an older Camaro, we can help you choose between a stock rebuild and a performance build.
Modern Camaro Transmissions
From the 1990s onward, Camaros used electronically controlled automatics and six-speed manuals. Broadly speaking:
- 1990s to early 2000s: the four-speed 4L60E automatic, with five- and six-speed manuals available
- 2010 to 2015: six-speed automatics, including the 6L50 on V6 cars, the 6L80E on many V8 cars and the 6L90E on the supercharged ZL1, plus a six-speed manual
- 2016 onward: eight-speed automatics such as the 8L45 and 8L90, later joined by ten-speed units on certain V8 models, with a six-speed manual still offered
We confirm the exact transmission by VIN and RPO code before quoting.
Common Camaro Transmission Problems
Horsepower beyond the stock rating
Many Camaros receive tunes, superchargers or other engine modifications. Extra torque can overwhelm stock clutches, the torque converter and, on older cars, the 4L60E’s sunshell and input drum. If your car is modified, we will build the transmission to match. See performance transmission builds.
Shudder and harsh shifts on newer automatics
Six- and eight-speed Camaros can develop converter shudder, flare or harsh downshifts tied to converter clutch wear, valve body issues or fluid breakdown.
Manual transmission and clutch wear
Hard launches and heavy traffic wear clutches, synchronizers and the hydraulic release system. A slipping clutch, a pedal that sticks or grinding into second or third should be checked soon. Visit clutch replacement and hydraulic clutch repair.
Heat soak
Low-slung sports cars sit close to hot pavement and often have tight engine bays. Transmission fluid and clutch hydraulics can run hotter than in a truck, which accelerates wear.
Signs Your Camaro Needs Transmission Work
- Slipping or flare under hard acceleration
- Shudder at light throttle
- Delayed, harsh or missing shifts
- Clutch slipping, chattering or a soft pedal
- Grinding, whining or clunking noises
Grinding while shifting a manual is covered on our grinding noise when shifting page.
Camaro Transmission Pricing
For Camaros equipped with GM units that carry confirmed pricing, starting prices include removal and installation: 4L60E from $2,795, 6L80E from $4,495 and 6L90E from $4,795. A billet torque converter adds about $300. Final cost depends on your car and findings. For classic automatics, eight- and ten-speed units, manual transmissions and performance builds, cost depends on the vehicle, findings and upgrades, so call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote.
How We Work on Your Camaro
- Discuss how you drive the car and any engine modifications
- Road test, scan for codes and review live data on electronic units
- Inspect fluid, cooler, mounts, clutch hydraulics and driveline
- Recommend a repair, stock rebuild or upgraded build, with a free estimate
- Complete the work, then road test and confirm proper operation
Many performance owners also ask about transmission upgrades such as upgraded clutches, shift calibration and extra cooling.
Daily Driver or Weekend Car?
How you use your Camaro shapes the right repair. A daily driver that commutes on the Loop 101 benefits most from a durable, smooth-shifting rebuild with good cooling. A weekend car that sees spirited driving may need stronger clutches and a matched torque converter. A show car may simply need a correct, reliable stock rebuild. Telling us your plans helps us recommend parts that fit the car instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. Keeping fluid fresh matters no matter how the car is driven; see synthetic transmission fluid benefits.
