Around Glendale, Peoria and Surprise, Pacificas carry families, car seats, sports gear and road-trip luggage through some of the hottest driving conditions in the country. Sun West Transmissions offers Chrysler Pacifica transmission repair for the nine-speed automatic, the hybrid drive system and older Pacifica crossovers.
We are a dedicated transmission shop. Every Pacifica gets a careful diagnosis, a free estimate and a clear explanation of your options.
Know Your Pacifica’s Transmission
- Current-generation Pacifica minivan (2017 model year onward, gas models) uses the 948TE nine-speed automatic, which is based on the ZF 9HP design. All-wheel-drive versions add a power transfer unit and rear drive module.
- Pacifica Hybrid uses an electrically variable transaxle with two electric motors. It works very differently from a conventional automatic and needs hybrid-aware diagnosis.
- Original Pacifica crossover (mid-2000s) used Chrysler four-speed and six-speed front-wheel-drive automatics from the 41TE and 62TE families.
For more on the nine-speed, see our 948TE rebuild page, our ZF 9HP rebuild page and our guide to 948TE problems, which also apply to many Jeep models.
Common Pacifica Transmission Problems
Harsh, Jerky or Delayed Shifts
Nine-speed Pacificas are known for occasional rough shifts, particularly at low speeds and when slowing down, as well as delayed engagement from park. Many of these complaints have been addressed by software updates. When updates do not help, internal issues such as clutch wear or valve body problems may be the cause.
Limp Mode and Warning Messages
A “service transmission” message with the van stuck in one gear means the control system has detected a fault. This can come from wiring, sensors, low fluid or internal damage. Our transmission warning light page explains what those alerts mean.
Clunking and Shudder
A clunk when shifting into gear or a shudder while accelerating can involve the transmission, engine mounts or AWD components. We sort out the source before recommending any repair.
Hybrid Drive Concerns
On the Pacifica Hybrid, drive complaints may involve the transaxle, electric motors, inverter or software. Some of these are covered by factory programs, so we will tell you if a dealer visit makes more sense.
How We Diagnose a Pacifica
- Scan all relevant modules for current and history codes, including any software update status.
- Check fluid level and condition. The nine-speed requires a specific fluid and a precise temperature-based check procedure.
- Road test and review live data such as shift timing, clutch slip and temperature.
- Inspect mounts, axles, the power transfer unit on AWD vans, and cooler lines.
- Explain what we found and give a free estimate.

Repair Options
A Pacifica complaint might be solved with a software update or relearn through our TCM programming service, a fluid correction, a valve body repair or a complete transmission rebuild. In some cases a replacement unit is the best value.
Cost depends on which transmission your Pacifica has, what failed and the parts needed. We do not quote numbers without a diagnosis. Call for a free quote, and ask about financing if the repair is unplanned.
Pacifica Care in Arizona Heat
The nine-speed packs a lot of clutches and electronics into a compact case. That makes fluid condition and correct fill level especially important when summer temperatures climb past 110 degrees.
- Do not overfill or underfill. Level must be checked using the correct procedure.
- Use only the specified fluid.
- Keep software up to date, since updates often improve shift quality.
- Have new shift complaints checked early to prevent heat-related damage.

Chrysler Pacifica Transmission FAQ
Will a software update fix my Pacifica’s rough shifting?
It often helps, but not always. If the transmission has internal wear, an update alone will not solve it. We check both.
Do you work on the Pacifica Hybrid?
We can diagnose drive concerns on the hybrid. If your issue falls under a factory program, we will let you know.
