A Workhorse Four-Speed
The Ford 4R70W is a four-speed overdrive automatic that grew out of the earlier AOD and AODE. Ford used it from the 1990s into the late 2000s in F-150 pickups, Expeditions, Mustangs, Crown Victorias, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars, among others. Many of the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis cars that once served as police and taxi fleets still run on these transmissions, and plenty of F-150s from that era are still working in the West Valley.
At this age, most 4R70W units have high mileage, and certain failure patterns are common. Here is what to watch for.
Common Ford 4R70W Problems
Flare or Slip on the 2-3 Shift
A flare, where engine RPM jumps between second and third gear, is a classic 4R70W complaint. It is often tied to wear in the direct clutch circuit, the intermediate band, or sealing rings that leak pressure. Left alone, the flare gets worse until third and fourth gear slip or disappear. See RPM flare between shifts.
Harsh or Delayed Engagement
A bang going into drive or reverse, or a long delay before the vehicle moves, can come from a faulty electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid, a sticking valve, worn clutch packs or low fluid. Read about delayed engagement.
Loss of Overdrive
Fourth gear depends on the overdrive band and its servo. Wear in these parts, or a shift solenoid problem, can cause the transmission to stay in third or slip in fourth.
Torque Converter Shudder
Converter clutch wear and pump or stator support bushing wear can cause shudder or vibration when the converter locks at cruise. Worn bushings also allow pressure to leak, affecting both the converter and the shifts.
Electrical and Sensor Issues
Shift solenoids, the EPC solenoid, the range sensor and the internal wiring harness can all fail with age and heat. Electrical faults often cause erratic shifting, harsh shifts or no shifts at all, and they can be mistaken for internal failure.
Leaks and Overheating
Old pan gaskets, front pump seals and cooler lines leak. In Phoenix heat, low fluid quickly leads to slipping and burnt clutches. Aging radiators with internal transmission coolers can also fail. See radiator replacement.
What You Can Safely Check
Most 4R70W applications have a dipstick. With the engine running, the vehicle on level ground and the fluid at operating temperature, check the level and condition according to the owner’s manual. Look for burnt smell, dark color or debris. Check for leaks under the vehicle. Our guide on how to check transmission fluid explains the process, and transmission fluid colors explained helps interpret what you see.
How Sun West Diagnoses the 4R70W
We road test, scan for codes and review data such as commanded gear, EPC pressure command and fluid temperature. We check the fluid and look at debris in the pan. A line pressure test tells us whether pressure is in spec, which helps separate a solenoid or valve body problem from worn clutches and bands. We also check the electrical side before recommending internal work.
Repair Options
- Fluid and filter service when the unit is healthy and only needs maintenance.
- Solenoid and electrical repair for shift or pressure control faults.
- Valve body repair for sticking valves and worn bores. See valve body repair.
- Rebuild for slipping, flares and worn hard parts. A quality rebuild replaces bushings, seals, clutches and bands and updates known weak points. See our 4R70W rebuild page.
The later 4R75W is closely related and shares many of the same issues. See the 4R75W rebuild page.
What It Costs
Cost depends on the vehicle, what failed and whether rebuilding, a remanufactured unit or a quality used transmission makes the most sense for an older vehicle. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote. Our article on rebuild vs. replace can help you weigh the options. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs.
When to Stop Driving
If the transmission slips badly, loses a gear, or the fluid smells burnt, limit driving. Continued slipping can turn a repairable unit into one with damaged drums and a contaminated converter.
Ford 4R70W Problems: FAQ
Is it worth rebuilding a 4R70W in an older car?
Often yes, especially in a vehicle that is otherwise in good shape. Compare the repair to the value and condition of the vehicle.
Can a bad EPC solenoid cause harsh shifts?
Yes. The EPC solenoid controls line pressure, and a fault can cause harsh shifts or slipping.
Do you work on Crown Victoria and Town Car transmissions?
Yes, along with F-150 and Mustang units. Call us for a free estimate.
