The TorqShift in Ford Super Duty Trucks
The Ford 5R110W, marketed as the TorqShift, is a heavy-duty five-speed automatic used in F-250, F-350 and larger Super Duty trucks, the Excursion and some E-Series vans during the 2000s and into the 2010s. It sat behind both gas V8 and V10 engines and the Power Stroke diesels of that era. It was built for towing and work, and many have lived hard lives pulling trailers, fifth-wheels and equipment across Arizona.
When these trucks come in with transmission trouble, the complaints tend to fall into a few familiar categories.
Common Ford 5R110W Problems
Torque Converter Problems
The converter in a diesel Super Duty handles a lot of torque. Converter clutch wear causes shudder when the converter locks at cruise, and severe converter failures can send debris through the transmission and cooler. Converter clutch slip codes and shudder on light throttle are common signs. See what is a torque converter.
Slipping Under Load
Towing heavy trailers in desert heat wears clutch packs. Slipping on hills, when merging, or after a long hot pull usually points to worn clutches, low line pressure or internal sealing problems. Worn components around the center support and intermediate clutch area are known to cause slips in certain gears on high-mileage units.
Harsh or Erratic Shifts
The 5R110W uses a solenoid body bolted to the valve body. Sticking solenoids, wiring problems or debris in the valve body can cause harsh shifts, missed shifts or limp mode. Valve bore wear, especially in the converter clutch and line pressure circuits, is a frequent finding on higher-mileage trucks. Learn about valve body repair.
Overheating
Heavy towing in Phoenix summers can push fluid temperatures high. Restricted coolers, failing thermostatic bypass valves and an aging radiator all contribute. Overheated fluid breaks down and accelerates every other problem on this list. See why transmissions overheat.
Speed Sensor and Electrical Issues
Failed turbine or output speed sensors, corroded connectors and chafed wiring can cause erratic shifting or a sudden loss of shifting. These problems can mimic internal failure, so electrical checks come first.
Leaks
Front pump seals, cooler line fittings, pan gaskets and the output seal can leak. Low fluid in a heavy-duty unit causes slipping and heat quickly.
What You Can Safely Check
Check the fluid level with the engine running and the fluid at operating temperature, following the procedure in your owner’s manual. Look for leaks and note the fluid color and smell. If you tow, watch the transmission temperature gauge if your truck has one. If the temperature is climbing or the truck is slipping, unhook and let it cool before continuing. Read towing and your transmission.
How Sun West Diagnoses the 5R110W
We road test, loaded when necessary, while monitoring converter slip, commanded gear, line pressure command, solenoid states and fluid temperature. We scan for codes, inspect fluid and pan debris, and check the cooler and lines. When needed, we pressure test to tell a hydraulic problem from worn clutches. Our diesel transmission repair team works on these trucks regularly.
Repair Options
- Electrical repair: Sensors, connectors and wiring.
- Solenoid body or valve body work: For harsh or erratic shifting with good clutches.
- Cooling upgrades: An auxiliary cooling system for trucks that tow.
- Torque converter replacement: With a heavy-duty unit suited for towing.
- Rebuild: When clutches, bushings or seals are worn. See our 5R110W TorqShift rebuild page.
A good rebuild for a working truck includes updated parts for known weak points, a converter matched to the truck’s use, and a thorough cooler flush or replacement.
What It Costs
Cost depends on the truck, the engine, what failed and what upgrades you choose for your towing needs. We do not post a price for this unit, so call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote after diagnosis. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, and financing is available.
When to Stop Driving
If the truck slips while towing, the fluid smells burnt, the temperature gauge climbs into the red, or the transmission locks into one gear, stop towing and get it checked. A heavy trailer on a slipping transmission is both a repair risk and a safety risk.
Ford 5R110W Problems: FAQ
Is the 5R110W a good transmission?
Yes, it is a strong heavy-duty design. Most problems come from heat, heavy use and age, which a quality rebuild can address.
Should I upgrade the converter on a diesel truck?
For trucks that tow or have added power, a heavy-duty converter is often a smart choice. We can explain the options.
Do you work on F-250 and F-350 trucks?
Yes. See our F-250 Super Duty and F-350 Super Duty pages.
