The Focus and Fiesta Shudder Explained
Ford used the PowerShift six-speed dual-clutch transmission, also known as the DPS6, in the Fiesta and Focus during much of the 2010s. Unlike a conventional automatic with a torque converter, the PowerShift is essentially two manual transmissions working together, each with its own dry clutch, operated by electric motors and a computer. It was designed for efficiency, but many owners became familiar with one complaint in particular: shudder.
The shudder usually shows up when pulling away from a stop or creeping in traffic, and it can feel like the car is bucking or shaking. Here is why it happens.
How the PowerShift Works
One clutch handles the odd gears and the other handles the even gears. The transmission control module pre-selects the next gear and swaps clutches for quick shifts. Because the clutches are dry and engagement is controlled by actuator motors, smooth launches depend on clean clutch surfaces, accurate actuator movement and correct software. Common Causes of Ford PowerShift Shudder
Clutch Contamination
A well-known cause is fluid leaking from the transmission’s input shaft seals onto the dry clutch surfaces. Even a small amount of oil on the friction material causes the clutch to grab and slip unevenly, producing shudder on takeoff. Replacing the clutch without fixing the leaking seals usually brings the shudder back.
Worn or Glazed Clutches
Stop-and-go driving, like rush hour on Loop 101 or busy surface streets, generates heat in a dry clutch. Over time the friction surface glazes or wears, and engagement becomes rough.
Clutch Actuators and Release Forks
Electric actuator motors and the release mechanism control how the clutches engage. Wear or failure in these parts causes jerky or delayed engagement, and sometimes a loss of drive.
Transmission Control Module Problems
The TCM on these vehicles has had its own share of failures. A failing module can cause shudder, harsh shifts, loss of gears or a no-move condition. Software updates have also been released to change how the clutches are controlled. See what is a transmission control module.
Software and Clutch Relearn
After clutch replacement or a module change, the system must relearn clutch engagement points. Skipping this step causes poor launch quality.
Other Symptoms That Often Appear
- Hesitation or delay when pulling away from a stop.
- Grinding or clunking noises during low-speed shifts.
- Rolling back on hills before engagement.
- A transmission warning message and reduced power.
- Loss of drive or neutral feeling while driving.
What You Can Safely Check
Note when the shudder happens and whether it is worse when the car is hot or in heavy traffic. Check for a warning message on the dash. Ask a Ford dealer or check Ford’s recall lookup to see whether your vehicle has open recalls or extended coverage that may apply. Avoid holding the car on a hill with light throttle, which heats the clutches; use the brake instead.
How Sun West Diagnoses PowerShift Shudder
We road test the vehicle and scan the transmission module for codes and data such as clutch position, clutch adapts and actuator performance. If the data points to contamination or clutch wear, the transmission is removed and inspected for seal leaks. We also confirm the software level and the condition of the actuators and module. Read how transmission shops diagnose problems.
How It Is Fixed
- Software update and clutch relearn when engagement settings are the main issue.
- Clutch replacement with seal repair, so new clutches are not contaminated again.
- Actuator or release component replacement when they are worn or failing.
- TCM repair or replacement with proper programming.
- Transmission rebuild when internal damage is present. See our DPS6 PowerShift rebuild page.
Our Ford Fusion and Ford Escape pages cover other Ford models, which use conventional automatics rather than the PowerShift.
What It Costs
Cost depends on the model, mileage and whether the problem is software, clutch, actuator, module or internal. We do not quote numbers without inspection. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty, and financing is available.
When to Stop Driving
Mild shudder is annoying but not usually an emergency. If the car loses drive, rolls back unexpectedly on hills, or shows a transmission warning with reduced power, stop driving and have it checked. Losing drive while crossing traffic is a real safety hazard.
Ford PowerShift Shudder: FAQ
Is PowerShift shudder normal?
Some firmness is part of a dry dual-clutch design, but a pronounced shake or bucking on takeoff is not normal and points to a problem.
Will new clutches fix the shudder permanently?
Only if the cause is addressed. If leaking seals contaminated the old clutches, they must be repaired too.
Is a used PowerShift a good option?
It can carry the same issues. Ask us about used vs. remanufactured transmissions.
