Honda Transmissions Are Different by Design
Honda has long built its own automatic transmissions, and for many years it used a design that differs from most other automakers. Instead of planetary gearsets, many Honda automatics use parallel shafts with gear pairs and a hydraulic clutch for each gear, much like an automated manual. More recent Hondas use continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) in models like the Civic, Accord and CR-V, and some larger models such as the Pilot and Odyssey have used nine-speed and ten-speed automatics.
Because the designs vary so much, Honda transmission problems depend heavily on the model and year. Here are the patterns we see most often.
Older Honda and Acura Automatics
Clutch Pack Failure
Some Honda and Acura automatics from roughly the late 1990s and early 2000s, especially in V6 Accords, Odysseys, Pilots and several Acura models, developed a reputation for failing clutch packs. A common symptom is a flare or slip on a particular shift, often into third gear, followed by a flashing D light and limp mode. Debris from worn clutches then circulates and can affect other parts.
Fluid Sensitivity
Honda automatics are designed for Honda-specified fluid. Using a generic fluid can change shift feel and clutch behavior. Partial drain-and-fill services are the norm, so it may take more than one service to fully refresh the fluid.
Solenoids and Pressure Switches
Shift solenoids and pressure switches, mounted on the outside of many Honda transmissions, can stick or fail, causing harsh shifts, flare and codes. These are often serviceable without removing the transmission.
Honda CVTs
Many newer Civics, Accords, CR-Vs, HR-Vs and Fits use CVTs. Common complaints include judder or shudder at low speed, a delay when pulling away, and droning noise. Honda released software updates for some models to address judder. Fluid condition is critical, as CVTs require a specific CVT fluid and are sensitive to heat. See our Honda CVT rebuild page and CVT vs. automatic.
Nine-Speed and Ten-Speed Automatics
Some Pilots, Passports, Odysseys and Acuras used a nine-speed automatic based on a ZF design, which drew complaints of rough shifting and hesitation that were often addressed through software. Later models moved to Honda’s own ten-speed. Shift quality issues on these units often start with software and adaptive learning before any hardware is involved.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Flashing D or warning light on the dash.
- Slip or flare during a shift.
- Harsh or delayed engagement into drive or reverse.
- Judder at low speed, especially in CVT models.
- Whining, grinding or humming noises.
- Dark or burnt-smelling fluid.
What You Can Safely Check
Many older Hondas have an easy-to-reach dipstick; follow the owner’s manual for checking the level, which may differ from other vehicles. Look for leaks and note the color and smell of the fluid. Write down when the symptom appears. Check for open recalls or extended coverage through a Honda dealer or the manufacturer’s lookup. Our guide on how to check transmission fluid can help.
How Sun West Diagnoses Honda Transmissions
We road test, scan for codes and review data such as shaft speeds, solenoid commands, pressure switch status and fluid temperature. On CVTs we look at ratio control and slip. We inspect the fluid for debris and check the external solenoids and switches. Then we explain whether the fix is a fluid service, software, an external component or an internal repair. See how transmission shops diagnose problems.
Repair Options
- Fluid service with the correct Honda fluid.
- Solenoid or pressure switch replacement.
- Software updates and relearns.
- Rebuild for internal clutch or bearing wear. See our Honda 6-speed rebuild page.
- A quality used or remanufactured unit when that makes more sense. See used vs. remanufactured.

What It Costs
Cost depends on the model, transmission type and diagnosis. A solenoid and a full rebuild are very different jobs. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, and financing is available.
When to Stop Driving
If the D light is flashing and the transmission is slipping or stuck in one gear, limit driving and avoid freeways. If you smell burning fluid or the vehicle will not move properly, stop and call.
Honda Transmission Problems: FAQ
What does a flashing D light mean on a Honda?
On many older Hondas, it indicates the transmission computer has detected a fault and stored a code. Have it scanned promptly.
Can I use universal transmission fluid in my Honda?
Honda recommends its own specified fluid. Using the correct fluid helps avoid shift problems.
Are Honda CVTs reliable?
Many run well with proper maintenance. Heat and fluid neglect are the biggest risks.
