The JF011E, also known by Nissan as the RE0F10A, is a continuously variable transmission built by Jatco, Nissan’s transmission partner. It was one of the first CVTs used in large numbers in mainstream American cars, appearing in Nissan’s popular sedans and crossovers starting in the mid-to-late 2000s. It was also used by Mitsubishi, Dodge and Jeep in some models. Many JF011E-equipped vehicles are now well past 100,000 miles, and Arizona’s heat has been especially tough on them.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses, repairs and rebuilds the JF011E. We will help you understand whether your car’s problem can be repaired and what makes sense for a vehicle of its age.
Vehicles That Use the JF011E
- Nissan Altima with the 2.5L or 3.5L, earlier CVT generation
- Nissan Rogue, first generation
- Nissan Murano in certain years
- Nissan Sentra with the 2.5L and Nissan Maxima in certain years
- Some Mitsubishi Outlander and Lancer, Dodge Caliber, and Jeep Compass and Patriot models
Later Nissan models moved to the JF016E and other Jatco CVTs. Because model years overlap, we always confirm the exact unit.
How the JF011E Works
The JF011E uses a steel push belt between two variable pulleys, a torque converter for takeoff and a planetary set for reverse. A step motor and the valve body control pulley ratio, while the transmission control module manages line pressure and belt clamping. When fluid breaks down or pressure control falters, the belt and pulleys can slip and wear, creating metal debris that spreads through the unit.
Common JF011E Problems
Whining and Droning Noise
A whine that grows louder with speed is one of the most frequent complaints. It often comes from worn pulley bearings or belt and pulley wear. Once bearing noise starts, internal damage is usually underway.
Shudder and Judder
A vibration when accelerating gently, especially from low speeds, can come from the torque converter, fluid condition or belt slip.
Overheating and Reduced Power
When CVT fluid gets too hot, the computer may limit engine power to protect the transmission. In Phoenix summer traffic, drivers sometimes notice the car losing power on the freeway or struggling up hills. Our transmission overheating page explains the warning signs.
Step Motor and Valve Body Issues
Problems with the step motor or valve body can cause erratic ratio changes, high RPM with poor acceleration or codes related to ratio control.
Hesitation and Slipping
A lag when pulling away or RPM rising without matching acceleration usually means the belt or clutches are slipping. Our Nissan CVT problems page covers these symptoms across models.
How We Diagnose a JF011E
We scan for codes, review live data such as pulley ratio, line pressure and fluid temperature, check the fluid level and condition, look for debris and road test the car. Debris in the fluid typically indicates internal wear. A fluid service may help a CVT with only mildly degraded fluid, but it cannot repair worn bearings or pulleys. Repair, Rebuild or Replace?
For an older JF011E, the options include component repair, rebuilding with new bearings, belt and wear parts when available, or replacing the CVT with a remanufactured or quality used unit. The right choice depends on the car’s mileage, overall condition and how long you plan to keep it. We will explain the trade-offs clearly. It is also worth checking with a Nissan dealer whether any extended coverage applies to your VIN, since Nissan extended CVT coverage on some vehicles in the past.
JF011E Rebuild and Replacement Cost
Cost depends on whether the transmission is rebuilt or replaced, the type of replacement unit, the cooler and any additional parts. We do not quote numbers before diagnosis, but estimates are free. Our CVT repair cost guide explains the main factors, and financing is available. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty.
Keeping a Nissan CVT Cool in Arizona
Heat is the biggest enemy of the JF011E. Change the CVT fluid on a regular schedule with Nissan’s specified fluid, avoid towing beyond the vehicle’s ratings and accelerate smoothly. Some owners add an external cooler to reduce operating temperatures. Ask us about an auxiliary cooler installation.
Nissan JF011E CVT FAQ
Is the JF011E the same as the RE0F10A?
Yes. JF011E is Jatco’s designation and RE0F10A is Nissan’s name for the same CVT.
Why does my Altima lose power on hot days?
The CVT may be overheating and entering a protection mode that limits power. It should be diagnosed before it causes more damage.
Will a fluid change fix my CVT whine?
Usually not. A whine often points to worn bearings or pulleys. Fluid service is preventive, not a cure for internal wear.
