The P0715 code is defined as “Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction.” The input speed sensor, also called the turbine speed sensor, measures how fast the transmission input shaft is turning. That shaft is driven by the turbine inside the torque converter. Without a good input speed signal, the transmission computer cannot accurately judge shift timing, slip or gear ratio, and it often switches to a protective mode.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses P0715 on domestic and import vehicles. Here is what it means for you.
Why the Input Speed Signal Matters
The transmission computer compares input shaft speed with output shaft speed to calculate which gear the transmission is actually in and whether clutches are slipping. It also compares input speed with engine RPM to calculate torque converter slip. Those calculations drive shift timing, line pressure and converter clutch control. When the input signal disappears or becomes erratic, the computer loses one of its most important references. Learn more about the transmission control module.
Common Symptoms of P0715
- Check engine light, sometimes with P0700
- Transmission stuck in one gear or in limp mode
- Harsh or erratic shifting, especially harsh engagement
- No torque converter lockup
- Delayed shifts or flare
- On some vehicles, an erratic or dead tachometer or speedometer, depending on design
Common Causes of P0715
Failed Sensor
Speed sensors are typically magnetic or Hall-effect devices. Heat cycling, internal shorts or open windings cause failure. Some sensors are mounted externally on the case; others are inside the transmission or part of an internal module.
Wiring and Connectors
A chafed harness, corroded terminal or loose connector interrupts the signal. Fluid leaks wicking into connectors and heat from the exhaust are common contributors in Arizona.
Metal Debris on the Sensor
Magnetic sensors can collect fine metal particles from internal wear, which distorts the signal. Debris is also a sign that the transmission may have other problems. Check fluid condition.
Damaged Reluctor or Tone Ring
The sensor reads teeth or slots on a rotating drum or shaft. A damaged reluctor, or a component that has shifted out of position from wear, can cause a P0715 even when the sensor is fine.
Internal Electronics
On transmissions with internal control modules or internal harnesses, the fault may lie in those assemblies. Some applications are known for internal module issues that set speed sensor codes.
What You Can Safely Check
- Note the symptoms and when they appear, such as only when hot.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition. Dark fluid with metallic sparkle suggests internal wear.
- Look for an external sensor connector near the transmission and check whether it is plugged in securely, only if you can do so safely.
- Have the code read with a scan tool that can display transmission data.
Avoid replacing the sensor based on the code alone. Many P0715 repairs turn out to be wiring, connectors or something internal.
How We Diagnose and Fix P0715
At our Glendale shop, we read all modules and freeze-frame data, then watch input speed on a scan tool during a road test. A signal that drops out, spikes or reads zero tells us a lot. We check sensor resistance or output as appropriate for the design, test wiring and connectors, and inspect fluid for debris. If the sensor is external, replacement is often straightforward. If it is internal, the repair may require pan or valve body removal, or in some cases transmission removal. See computer transmission diagnostics and solenoid and sensor replacement.
If debris or a damaged reluctor is found, we explain whether a transmission rebuild is the more reliable fix.
Is It Safe to Drive With P0715?
In limp mode, short, careful trips to the shop are usually possible. Avoid freeways, towing and long drives. If shifts are harsh enough to jolt the vehicle, if it slips, or if it loses drive, stop driving. Harsh engagement caused by missing speed data can damage driveline parts over time.
Related Codes
P0715 is related to P0717 (input speed sensor no signal) and often appears alongside P0720 output speed sensor codes when wiring or internal electronics are involved.
P0715 Code FAQ
Is the input speed sensor the same as the turbine speed sensor?
Yes, in most applications the terms are used interchangeably.
Can a P0715 cause no shifting?
Yes. Many vehicles hold a single gear when the input speed signal is lost.
How much does it cost to fix P0715?
It depends on the vehicle, the sensor location and the cause. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free estimate.
