P0731 Code: Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio — Meaning & Fix
Sun West Transmissions — Glendale, AZ. Free estimates, honest diagnosis and a 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty on qualifying rebuilds and replacements.
The P0731 code means “Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio.” The transmission computer commanded first gear, then compared input shaft speed to output shaft speed, and the result did not match the ratio first gear should produce. In most cases, that means something that holds first gear is slipping, though sensor and hydraulic problems can also set it.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses P0731 on many makes and models. Here is what this code tells us and how we approach it.
Why First Gear Is Special
First gear multiplies engine torque the most, so the parts holding it are under the highest load every time you pull away from a stop. In many automatic transmissions, first gear relies on a forward clutch plus a holding device such as a one-way clutch (sprag or roller clutch), a low/reverse clutch or a band. Which parts are involved depends on the specific transmission design.
Because every trip starts in first, and because Phoenix-area traffic means constant stopping and starting, first gear components see a lot of work. Towing and heavy loads add even more stress.
Common Symptoms of P0731
- Check engine light, often with P0700 or P0730
- Slipping or flare when pulling away from a stop
- Delayed engagement into drive. See delayed engagement
- Weak acceleration from a stop, as if starting in second
- Transmission in limp mode
- No drive in severe cases. See no drive
Common Causes of P0731
Low or Burnt Fluid
Low fluid reduces apply pressure, and degraded fluid reduces clutch grip. Both cause slipping, especially in first gear where the load is highest.
Worn Forward Clutch
The forward clutch is applied in first and other forward gears on many designs. Worn plates or leaking piston seals cause slipping in first, sometimes before other gears are affected.
Failed One-Way Clutch
Where first gear relies on a sprag or roller clutch, a worn or broken one can cause slipping or a complete loss of first gear. In some designs, the transmission may still pull away if you select manual low, because a different clutch or band then holds the gear set.
Low/Reverse Clutch or Band Issues
On some transmissions, a low/reverse clutch or band is part of first gear operation. Wear there can cause both P0731 and reverse problems. See no reverse.
Hydraulic and Solenoid Problems
Worn valve body bores, sticking valves, a failing pressure control solenoid, or leaking seals can lower first gear apply pressure. See valve body repair.
Speed Sensor Errors
Because the ratio is calculated from speed sensors, an inaccurate input or output speed sensor can set a false P0731. That is why we verify sensor data before condemning hard parts.
What You Can Safely Check
- Check fluid level and condition if your vehicle has a dipstick. Burnt odor or dark color suggests clutch wear.
- Pay attention to how the vehicle pulls away from a stop compared to normal.
- Look for leaks under the vehicle.
- Avoid hard launches, towing and steep driveways until diagnosed.
How We Diagnose and Fix P0731
At our Glendale shop, we read all codes, review freeze-frame data, and watch input and output speeds as the vehicle pulls away in first. That confirms whether first is truly slipping and how much. We check speed sensor accuracy, inspect fluid for friction material and metal, and, when appropriate, perform a hydraulic pressure test. Knowing the transmission model, we also look for known first-gear failure patterns. Our diagnostic testing page explains more.
If the cause is hydraulic or electrical, a targeted repair may solve it. If the forward clutch or one-way clutch is worn, a transmission rebuild is typically needed, with new frictions, seals and any worn hard parts. Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty.
Is It Safe to Drive With P0731?
A slipping first gear can leave you unable to pull into traffic quickly, which is a safety concern at busy intersections. It also produces heat that spreads damage. Drive only as needed to reach the shop, gently, or arrange transport if slipping is severe. Stop driving if you lose drive, smell burning fluid, or see smoke.
P0731 Code FAQ
Can a fluid change fix P0731?
If low or degraded fluid is the main cause and wear is minimal, a fluid service may help. If clutches are worn, internal repair is needed.
Why does my vehicle feel like it starts in second gear?
That is a common P0731 symptom, either from first gear slipping or the computer using a fail-safe gear.
How much does it cost to fix P0731?
That depends on the vehicle and the cause. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free estimate, and ask about financing.
