What P0741 Means

P0741 is defined as “Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off.” The computer commanded the torque converter clutch (TCC) to lock, then measured the difference between engine speed and transmission input speed. When the converter is locked, those speeds should be nearly identical. If the computer still sees too much slip, it sets P0741.

So while P0740 is usually an electrical fault, P0741 typically means the electrical command went out but the converter clutch did not hold. That points toward hydraulic or mechanical causes, although a weak solenoid can still be involved.

Symptoms of P0741

Shudder is the signature symptom. Many drivers mistake it for a tire balance or engine misfire problem. Our torque converter shudder page explains how to tell the difference.

Common Causes of P0741

Worn Converter Clutch Lining

The friction lining inside the converter wears over time, especially in vehicles that tow, idle in heat or have overheated in the past. Once worn or glazed, it slips instead of locking. Some designs, such as the GM 6L80E and 8L90, are known for converter shudder complaints; see our 6L80E torque converter shudder page.

Degraded Fluid

Converter clutches rely on the friction properties of the fluid. Old, oxidized or incorrect fluid can cause shudder and slip. In some cases, a correct fluid service with the specified fluid improves the condition if caught early.

TCC Solenoid or Regulator Valve Wear

The TCC solenoid and the valves that route apply pressure to the converter can wear. A worn regulator valve bore can leak pressure so the clutch never gets full apply force. This is a common valve body wear point on many transmissions.

Pump, Seals and Turbine Shaft Problems

Worn pump bushings, turbine shaft seals or input shaft seals can bleed off converter apply pressure before it reaches the clutch.

Engine Performance Issues

A misfire or rough-running engine can create speed fluctuations that confuse slip readings. A good technician checks engine health too.

What You Can Check

  1. Note the speed range and throttle level where shudder occurs
  2. Check fluid level and smell if your vehicle has a dipstick
  3. Ask whether the fluid has ever been serviced and with what fluid
  4. Check for open manufacturer service bulletins or software updates with your dealer

How We Diagnose P0741

We road test with a scan tool and watch commanded TCC status, desired versus actual slip, line pressure command and fluid temperature. We check fluid condition and, when appropriate, inspect the pan for debris. Pressure testing helps determine whether apply pressure reaches the converter. We also rule out engine misfires and drivetrain vibrations that can mimic shudder.

The answer may be a fluid service, a TCC solenoid, a valve body repair or a converter replacement. When the converter has shed lining material into the transmission, the rest of the unit has to be inspected too, since that debris travels everywhere. See our torque converter replacement page.

Is It Safe to Keep Driving?

You can usually drive gently to the shop, but a slipping converter clutch produces a lot of heat and contaminates the fluid. Long freeway trips, mountain climbs and towing can turn a converter problem into a transmission rebuild. Stop driving if the transmission overheats, you smell burning fluid, or the vehicle begins slipping in gear.

Cost to Repair P0741

Cost depends on the cause and the vehicle. A fluid service or solenoid is a smaller job than a converter replacement, and a converter replacement is a smaller job than a rebuild. For GM trucks and SUVs, our 6L80E rebuild pricing starts from $4,495 including removal and installation, and a billet converter adds about $300. For other units, call for a free quote. Qualifying work carries our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty and financing is available.

P0741 Code FAQ

Can a fluid flush fix P0741?

Sometimes, if the fluid is the main problem and the converter clutch is not badly worn. If lining material is gone, fluid alone will not fix it. See flush vs fluid change.

Do I need a new torque converter?

Only if testing shows the converter clutch itself is worn. Valve body and solenoid problems can cause the same code.

Is shudder dangerous?

It is not usually an immediate safety risk, but it signals heat and wear that will get worse.
