What Is P0765?

P0765 is the generic trouble code for “Shift Solenoid D Malfunction.” The transmission control module sets it when it detects an electrical fault in the circuit for the fourth lettered shift solenoid. You will mostly see this code on transmissions with five or more forward speeds, because older four-speed designs rarely used a solenoid D.

Modern multi-speed automatics, including many six-speed units found in trucks, SUVs and front-wheel-drive cars, rely on several solenoids and clutch-to-clutch shifting. In these designs, a solenoid often controls a specific clutch directly. When solenoid D drops out, the clutch it controls may not apply or release correctly, which can affect several gears.

Symptoms of P0765

Why Clutch-to-Clutch Transmissions Are Sensitive

In a clutch-to-clutch transmission, one clutch has to release at the same moment another applies. The computer controls this timing very precisely through its solenoids. If one solenoid circuit is unreliable, the overlap goes wrong. The result can be a flare, a bind-up, or the computer stepping in with a fail-safe gear. These transmissions also adapt over time, so a weak solenoid can cause shift quality to drift for a while before a code finally sets.

Common Causes

Solenoid Coil Failure

Heat and age wear out solenoid windings. Transmissions that run hot from towing, idling in summer traffic or lack of fluid service are more prone to electrical failures. Our page on how Arizona heat affects your transmission explains why.

Wiring and Terminals

A failed wire, loose pin or corroded terminal in the harness can interrupt the signal. Connectors near the exhaust or exposed to water crossings during monsoon storms take extra abuse.

Solenoid Body or Valve Body Assembly

Many transmissions that use a solenoid D house all solenoids in a single body bolted to the valve body. Internal connection faults in that assembly are a frequent cause.

Control Module and Software

The TCM may be mounted inside the transmission on some vehicles, or integrated with the valve body. Module faults and outdated calibrations can set solenoid codes. After certain repairs, programming or relearn procedures are required.

What You Can Check Safely

Some vehicles temporarily shift normally after restarting, then go back into fail-safe. That pattern is helpful information for your technician.

How Sun West Diagnoses P0765

We perform a full module scan with manufacturer-level data, review freeze-frame information and check for technical service bulletins. Electrical testing includes power and ground checks, solenoid resistance measurement, and circuit integrity tests. Our scan tools can command individual solenoids and display adaptive values and clutch fill data, which help us see whether the problem is electrical, hydraulic or a combination.

If internal access is needed, we inspect the solenoid body, valve body and fluid. Metal or friction debris tells us there may be mechanical damage too. Learn more on our computer transmission diagnostics page.

Is It Safe to Keep Driving?

Usually you can drive slowly to a repair facility, but expect weak acceleration. Avoid highways if the vehicle cannot hold a suitable gear, and do not tow. Stop driving if the transmission slips, binds, overheats or loses drive entirely, since a bind-up between clutches can cause sudden deceleration.

Repairing P0765

Repairs range from a wiring or connector fix to a solenoid or solenoid body replacement, a valve body repair, or module programming. If the transmission has internal wear, a rebuild or remanufactured unit may be the better value. GM 6L80E rebuilds start from $4,495 and 6L90E rebuilds from $4,795, including removal and installation. For other vehicles, cost depends on the transmission and findings, so call for a free quote.

P0765 Code FAQ

Why does my four-speed show P0765?

It is uncommon. On some designs the letter may be assigned to a different solenoid. Service information for your exact vehicle is needed to interpret it.

Does P0765 need a relearn after repair?

Many modern transmissions need an adaptive relearn after solenoid or valve body work so shifts are smooth.
