The Toyota K114 is a continuously variable transmission that Toyota calls its Direct Shift-CVT. It was introduced in the late 2010s and is best known as the automatic in the Corolla with the 2.0L engine, including the Corolla Hatchback. What makes it different from most CVTs is a physical launch gear. Instead of using the belt and pulleys from a standstill, the K114 pulls away using a conventional gear, then switches to the belt once the car is moving. Toyota designed it this way to improve acceleration feel and reduce belt load at takeoff.

Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses and repairs Toyota CVTs, including the K114. Because this is a newer transmission, many vehicles are still covered by Toyota’s factory warranty, and we will tell you if that applies before suggesting paid repairs.

Vehicles with the K114 Direct Shift-CVT

The K114 is used mainly in the Toyota Corolla with the 2.0L four-cylinder engine, in both sedan and hatchback form. Other Toyota and Lexus models use closely related Direct Shift-CVT designs with different model codes, and some Corolla versions with smaller engines use a different CVT. We confirm the exact transmission using the vehicle’s build information. For more about Toyota CVTs and other Toyota transmission issues, see our Toyota transmission problems overview.

How the K114 Works

A standard CVT uses a steel belt running between two variable-width pulleys to create an infinite range of ratios. The K114 adds a launch gear and a clutch system that handles the first part of acceleration. At low speeds, power flows through the gear. As speed increases, the transmission transfers power to the belt and pulleys. It also uses a torque converter with a lockup clutch. The result is a CVT that feels more like a conventional automatic when pulling away from a light. To understand the differences between transmission types, read our CVT vs. automatic guide.

Symptoms That Need Attention

Because the K114 is relatively new, there is less long-term failure history than with older designs. Still, these are the symptoms drivers should not ignore:

Why Heat Matters for CVTs

CVTs depend on precise hydraulic pressure to clamp the belt between the pulleys. Heat thins and breaks down the special CVT fluid, which can affect clamping force and lead to slip, noise and wear. Phoenix summers, rush-hour traffic on the Loop 101 and long idles in drive-through lines all add heat. Using the correct Toyota CVT fluid and servicing it on a severe-service schedule is important here. See why transmissions overheat for more.

How We Diagnose a K114 CVT

We scan for codes, check software status, review live data such as pulley ratios, belt slip indicators and fluid temperature, verify fluid level with Toyota’s procedure and road test the car. Some drivability complaints are addressed with software updates. Others relate to fluid condition, sensors or valve body components. Our CVT repair page explains our general approach.

Repair Options for the K114

Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty.

K114 Repair Cost

Cost depends on whether the issue is software, fluid, a component or internal damage, and on parts availability for this newer unit. We do not quote figures without diagnosis, but estimates are free. Read our CVT repair cost guide for the main cost factors, and ask about financing.

Tips for Corolla Owners

Accelerate smoothly, avoid holding the car on a hill with the throttle, and do not ignore new noises or warnings. If your Corolla is used for rideshare or delivery, read our rideshare transmission care tips, since constant stop-and-go is hard on any transmission.

Toyota K114 CVT FAQ

Is the K114 a regular CVT?

It is a CVT with an added physical launch gear for pulling away from a stop. After that, it uses a belt and pulleys like other CVTs.

Does the K114 need fluid changes?

Toyota specifies its own CVT fluid. In hot climates and heavy traffic, periodic service is good preventive maintenance.

Should I go to the dealer first?

If your Corolla is still under factory warranty, check with the dealer. We are happy to help when coverage has ended or for non-covered issues.
