Reliable, But Not Immune

Toyota has a well-earned reputation for durability, and many of its transmissions, often built by Aisin, last a very long time. But Toyotas also tend to stay on the road for a very long time, and high mileage, heat and towing eventually catch up. Many Toyota models also use “long-life” fluid with no dipstick, which can lead owners to skip service entirely.

Here is an overview of the Toyota transmission problems we see most often, by transmission family.

Truck and SUV Automatics

A750 Five-Speed

The A750 five-speed has been used in the Tacoma, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser and other trucks. It is generally durable. Complaints we see include torque converter shudder at light throttle, harsh or delayed engagement and slipping in high-mileage units that have towed or overheated. See our A750 rebuild page and Tacoma transmission repair.

AB60 Six-Speed

The AB60 six-speed was used in the Tundra, Sequoia and some Land Cruiser models. These trucks tow often, and heat is the main enemy. Converter shudder, slipping under load and fluid breakdown appear on hard-working trucks. See the AB60 rebuild page and Tundra transmission repair.

Car and Crossover Automatics

U-Series Front-Wheel-Drive Units

Toyota’s U-series transmissions, including the U151E and U660E, appeared in Camrys, Highlanders, Siennas, RAV4s and Lexus models. Complaints include delayed or harsh shifts, hesitation when accelerating from a stop and flare between gears. Some vehicles received software updates aimed at shift feel. Sticking solenoids and valve body wear are common hardware causes. See our U660E and U151E rebuild pages.

Eight-Speed Automatics

Newer Camry, RAV4, Highlander and other models moved to eight-speed automatics. Owners have reported hesitation, gear hunting and occasional harsh shifts. Many of these concerns are addressed through software and adaptive relearn procedures rather than hardware.

CVTs

The Corolla and some other models use CVTs, including a design with a physical launch gear for smoother takeoff. Like any CVT, they require correct fluid and are sensitive to heat. See the K114 CVT rebuild page.

Common Toyota Symptoms

Why “Lifetime” Fluid Is a Problem in Arizona

Many Toyota transmissions are filled with long-life fluid and have no dipstick. Under severe conditions, which include extreme heat, towing and heavy stop-and-go driving, fluid still breaks down. In the Phoenix area, those conditions are routine. Periodic fluid service can help extend transmission life. See how often to change transmission fluid and how Arizona heat affects your transmission.

What You Can Safely Check

Look for leaks under the vehicle and note when symptoms happen. If your Toyota has no dipstick, do not try to add fluid without the proper procedure, since overfill and underfill both cause problems. Check for open recalls or service campaigns through a Toyota dealer or the manufacturer’s lookup.

How Sun West Diagnoses Toyota Transmissions

We road test, scan for codes and review live data such as shift timing, converter slip, solenoid commands and fluid temperature. We check fluid level using Toyota’s fill-plug procedure and inspect fluid condition. Based on what we find, we recommend a software check, a fluid service, a solenoid or valve body repair, or a rebuild. See computer transmission diagnostics.

Repair Options

Many Toyota complaints are solved without removing the transmission. Depending on the cause, the fix may be a software update and relearn, a proper fluid service, or replacement of a shift solenoid or valve body components. When clutches, the converter or bearings are worn, a rebuild or a quality replacement unit is the long-term answer. Our article on rebuild vs. replace compares those options.

What It Costs

Cost depends on the model, transmission and diagnosis. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, and financing is available. Our Camry and RAV4 pages have model-specific information.

When to Stop Driving

If the transmission slips, flashes a warning, goes into limp mode or smells burnt, limit driving and have it checked. Hesitation that leaves you stuck when pulling into traffic is a safety issue, not just an annoyance.

Toyota Transmission Problems: FAQ

Does my Toyota really have lifetime transmission fluid?

The fluid is designed for long life under normal conditions. Arizona heat and towing count as severe conditions, so periodic service is a good idea.

Why does my Camry hesitate when I accelerate?

Hesitation can come from software, adaptive learning, throttle response or transmission wear. A diagnosis separates these.

Do you work on Lexus transmissions too?

Many Lexus models share Toyota and Aisin transmissions. Call us with your vehicle details.
