Toyota Tundra Transmission Repair for Valley Truck Owners
The Toyota Tundra is a full-size truck that many Arizona owners buy for towing: travel trailers headed for the high country, boats bound for Lake Pleasant or Saguaro Lake, and work trailers on job sites from Buckeye to Anthem. Towing in desert heat is about as hard as it gets for a transmission. Sun West Transmissions in Glendale provides Toyota Tundra transmission repair for every generation, along with transfer case, differential and driveline service.
We are a dedicated transmission shop. Your Tundra gets a thorough diagnosis and a free estimate, with no pressure and no guesswork.
Tundra Transmissions by Generation
- First generation (2000–2006): mostly four-speed Aisin automatics, with a five-speed automatic introduced on some later V8 trucks. Manuals were offered on some V6 trucks.
- Second generation (2007–2021): most V8 trucks use the AB60 six-speed automatic, a robust Aisin design. Some V6 trucks used a five-speed automatic.
- Third generation (2022 onward): a ten-speed automatic paired with twin-turbo V6 engines, including the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, which integrates an electric motor into the drivetrain.
Our AB60 rebuild page covers the six-speed in detail, and our Toyota transmission problems page reviews issues across Toyota models.
Common Tundra Transmission Problems
Overheating While Towing
The AB60 is a strong transmission, but heavy towing in July will test any unit. High temperatures break down fluid, harden seals and wear clutches. A long pull up the I-17 toward Sunset Point is a classic example. Upgraded cooling helps. See our auxiliary cooling system page.
Harsh Shifts or Delayed Engagement
High-mileage Tundras can develop a clunk into drive or reverse, harsh upshifts or delayed engagement. Causes include worn seals, valve body wear and old fluid. Mount wear can also make engagement feel harsher.
Shudder and Torque Converter Issues
A vibration at light throttle around highway speeds can come from torque converter clutch problems. Fluid condition is often a factor. Our torque converter replacement page explains when the converter needs replacing.
Leaks
Cooler lines, pan gaskets and seals can leak with age and heat. On some trucks, the transmission cooler is integrated with the radiator, so a failing radiator can also affect the transmission. See our radiator replacement page.
Ten-Speed Shift Quality
On newer Tundras, shift quality concerns may involve software, adaptive learning or hybrid system integration. Some of these may be covered by the factory warranty, and we will tell you if a dealer visit makes more sense.
Our Tundra Diagnostic Process
- Scan the transmission and engine modules for codes and freeze-frame data.
- Check fluid level and condition using Toyota’s temperature-based fill check. Many Tundras have no transmission dipstick.
- Road test with live data, including fluid temperature and slip.
- Inspect the transfer case, differentials, driveshafts, U-joints and cooler lines.
- Explain the findings and give you a free estimate.
Repair and Rebuild Options
Depending on the cause, your Tundra may need a fluid service, valve body repair, torque converter, a complete transmission rebuild or a replacement unit. If you tow heavy, ask about transmission upgrades and cooling improvements during the repair.
Cost depends on the transmission, what failed and which parts are needed. We do not quote numbers before diagnosing the truck. Call for a free quote, and ask about our financing options.
Towing Tips for Tundra Owners in Arizona
A few habits go a long way toward protecting a Tundra transmission in the desert.
- Use tow/haul mode when pulling a trailer to reduce gear hunting and heat.
- Monitor transmission temperature on the dash if your truck displays it, and slow down on long grades if it climbs.
- Service the fluid more often if you tow regularly. Our towing and your transmission guide explains why.
- Keep the radiator and cooler fins clean of dust and bugs.
- Check transfer case and differential fluid after towing season.

Toyota Tundra Transmission FAQ
How long does a Tundra transmission last?
Many last a very long time with good care, but heavy towing and heat shorten life. Regular fluid service and good cooling make a big difference.
Why does my Tundra clunk when I shift into drive?
It could be worn engine or transmission mounts, driveline slack or internal wear. We inspect all of these to find the real cause.
Do you work on the new Tundra hybrid?
We can inspect and diagnose newer Tundras. Call (623) 473-9800 to schedule a free estimate.
