The Toyota U151E is a five-speed automatic transaxle built by Aisin for Toyota and Lexus vehicles with V6 engines. It came along in the mid-2000s as Toyota moved its V6 models from four-speed to five-speed automatics, and it served until the six-speed U660E replaced it. The all-wheel-drive version is called the U151F. These vehicles were built to last, and many are still daily drivers in the Valley with high mileage on the odometer.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale repairs and rebuilds the U151E and U151F. If your older Toyota or Lexus is shifting strangely, we can find out why and help you decide whether repair, rebuild or replacement makes the most sense.
U151E and U151F Applications
The U151 family was used in V6 models during the mid-to-late 2000s, including:
- Toyota Camry and Camry Solara with the V6
- Toyota Avalon in certain years
- Toyota Highlander with the V6
- Toyota Sienna minivan in certain years
- Lexus RX and Lexus ES models of that era
Application years overlap with the newer six-speed in several models, so we always verify the unit. For the later six-speed, see our Aisin U660E page.
How the U151E Works
The U151E is an electronically controlled transaxle that uses shift solenoids and linear pressure-control solenoids in its valve body. The engine computer controls shift timing and line pressure and adapts to wear over time. It uses Toyota’s World Standard type fluid, and in most applications there is no traditional dipstick. Toyota released software updates for some vehicles to improve shift quality, so checking for available updates is part of a proper diagnosis.
Common U151E Problems
Harsh or Delayed 2-3 and 3-4 Shifts
A clunky upshift, a delayed shift when accelerating, or a hesitation before the transmission picks up the next gear are frequent complaints. Software, solenoids and worn clutches can each be responsible.
Shift Flare
An RPM jump between gears means the transaxle is not applying the next clutch quickly enough. On older, high-mileage units this often points to worn clutch packs or a valve body issue.
Converter Shudder
A slight vibration at highway speeds under light throttle can come from the torque converter clutch. Fluid condition plays a big part, and older fluid makes shudder more likely.
Solenoid Faults
When a shift or pressure control solenoid fails, the transaxle may shift harshly, hold a gear or set a code. Solenoid replacement can sometimes fix the problem without a rebuild.
Leaks and Low Fluid
Axle seals, pan gaskets and cooler connections are common leak points. Low fluid on a sealed transaxle often goes unnoticed until symptoms start.
How We Diagnose a U151E
We scan for codes, check software status, look at live data, verify fluid level and condition with the correct temperature procedure and road test the vehicle. We also check for metal and friction debris in the pan when appropriate. Our diagnosis guide explains what each step tells us.
Repair, Rebuild or Replace?
On a vehicle of this age, the right choice depends on its condition and how long you plan to keep it. A solenoid or software fix may be enough. If clutches are burnt, a full rebuild restores the transaxle. In some cases, a good used transmission or a remanufactured unit makes more financial sense. We will walk you through the options honestly. See also our article on used vs. remanufactured transmissions.
U151E Rebuild Process
- Remove the transaxle and disassemble it completely.
- Clean and inspect gear sets, the differential, drums and valve body.
- Replace clutches, steels, seals, gaskets, filter and worn bushings and bearings.
- Replace solenoids as needed and service the valve body.
- Service or replace the torque converter, flush the cooler, reinstall and road test.
Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty.
U151E Rebuild Cost
Cost depends on the vehicle, what failed, the converter and whether you choose a rebuild, a remanufactured unit or a used transaxle. We give free estimates after diagnosis. Our Toyota transmission problems page and Camry transmission repair page offer more model information. Financing is available.
Caring for an Older Toyota Transaxle
Have the fluid level checked periodically, especially if you see spots under the car. Consider a fluid service with the correct fluid if it has never been done. Pay attention to any new harshness, flare or shudder, because early repairs cost less than a full rebuild.
Toyota U151E Transmission FAQ
What is the difference between the U151E and U151F?
The U151E is for front-wheel-drive vehicles, and the U151F is for all-wheel-drive versions. The core transaxle is similar.
Can a software update fix my shift problem?
It may help with some shift-quality complaints. Worn parts or failed solenoids still need repair.
Is it worth rebuilding a transaxle in an older Toyota?
If the rest of the vehicle is in good condition, a rebuild is often a good value compared with replacing the vehicle.
