Car Shakes When Accelerating: What It Means & What To Do
Sun West Transmissions — Glendale, AZ. Free estimates, honest diagnosis and a 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty on qualifying rebuilds and replacements.
If your car shakes when accelerating but smooths out when you coast, the vibration is tied to torque, meaning something in the engine, transmission or driveline is reacting to load. That is a different problem from a shake that is constant at a certain speed, which is often tires or wheels. Figuring out which category you are in is the first step toward the right repair.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale diagnoses drivetrain vibrations on cars, trucks and SUVs. Here are the most common causes and how to narrow them down.
Describe the Shake: It Helps the Diagnosis
- Feels like driving over rumble strips at 30–50 mph under light throttle: often torque converter clutch shudder.
- Shake when pulling away from a stop that goes away at cruise: often inner CV joints, mounts or U-joints.
- Stumble or jerk with a flashing check engine light: engine misfire.
- Vibration that increases with speed, accelerating or not: usually tires, wheels or driveshaft balance.
- Steering wheel shake when braking: usually brake rotors, not the drivetrain.
Common Causes When a Car Shakes Under Acceleration
Torque Converter Shudder
Most modern automatics lock the torque converter clutch at cruising speeds to improve fuel economy. If that clutch or its fluid is worn, it can grab and release rapidly, producing a shudder. Many GM, Ford and Chrysler applications are known for it. See our torque converter shudder page and 6L80E shudder page.
Inner CV Joints
On front-wheel-drive and AWD vehicles, a worn inner CV joint often causes a shake on acceleration that disappears when you lift off the gas. Torn boots are a common starting point. See CV axle replacement.
Engine and Transmission Mounts
Broken or collapsed mounts let the powertrain move and transfer vibration into the body. The shake may be worst from a stop or going up a hill. See transmission mount replacement.
U-Joints and Driveshafts
On rear-wheel-drive trucks, a worn U-joint, a bent driveshaft or incorrect driveline angles after a lift kit can cause vibration under load. See driveshaft repair.
Engine Misfires
Worn spark plugs, coils or injectors can cause misfires that feel like a shake on acceleration, especially under load. A flashing check engine light means a severe misfire.
Transmission Internal Issues
Slipping clutches or a failing one-way clutch can cause a shudder during a shift or as the vehicle pulls away. This often comes with flare or delayed shifts.
What You Can Safely Check
- Note the speed, gear and throttle position when the shake happens, and whether it stops when you lift off the gas.
- Check whether the check engine light is on or flashing.
- Look at CV boots behind the front wheels for tears or grease spray, without crawling under an unsupported vehicle.
- Check tire condition and pressure.
- If you have a dipstick, check transmission fluid level and condition.
Why a Proper Diagnosis Matters
Different vibration sources can feel very similar from the driver’s seat. A torque converter shudder repair is very different from replacing an axle. At our Glendale shop we road test to reproduce the shake, monitor torque converter clutch slip and engine misfire data on a scan tool, and inspect axles, mounts, joints and tires on a lift. Read about how transmission shops diagnose problems.
Some converter shudder complaints improve with the correct fluid service, and some manufacturers have released specific procedures or software for it. Others need a torque converter replacement. We explain which applies to your vehicle.
Heat, Hills and Heavy Loads
Valley drivers often notice vibrations most when climbing grades, towing a trailer to the lake or running the A/C hard in summer traffic. These situations increase engine load and transmission temperature, which can make a marginal converter clutch or mount show itself. If you tow, see our towing and your transmission guide.
When to Stop Driving
Stop driving if the check engine light is flashing, if the vibration becomes violent, if you hear clicking or clunking from a front axle under acceleration, or if the transmission begins slipping. A failed CV joint or U-joint can separate. Mild converter shudder is not an emergency, but long-term driving with it can contaminate the fluid and damage the converter.
Car Shakes When Accelerating FAQ
Can a transmission cause shaking when accelerating?
Yes. Torque converter clutch shudder and slipping clutches are common transmission-related causes.
Why does the shake stop when I let off the gas?
That points to a load-related cause such as a converter clutch, CV joint, mount or U-joint, rather than tire balance.
How much does it cost to fix?
It depends on the cause. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free estimate.
